After the death of Gideon, Abimelech craved to inherit his father's position of authority over Israel. But as the son of a concubine, he does not enjoy the privilege to succeed. So, Abimelech used money to hire rough, immoral men as paid goons to help him slaughter his brothers.

Two Minor Judges Series

Tola and Jair are two simple minor Judges. They are minor because their stories end in small passages. Tola was a man of Issachar, son of Puah, the son of Dodo. Tola means ‘the crimson worm or red/purple worm.’ This name was used by two people in the Bible.

Abusive Acts Series

Here we have two pointed statements in this verse, one referring to the reviles at dignities, the other to the defilers of the flesh. Brute beasts can be smart but they obviously do not have spiritual knowledge. Their reasoning was no more advanced than that of animals' instincts.
