INTRODUCTION:

Self-examination is a spiritual discipline that is often neglected in the life of many believers. In an age of comparison and outward appearance, it is easy to focus on others and neglect the critical task of assessing one’s own walk with God. Yet the Bible calls us to constantly evaluate ourselves—not just our actions, but our motives, our hearts, and our faith.

Paul exhorted the Corinthian church to examine themselves to see whether they were in the faith. This was not a call to legalistic introspection, but a godly check-up of one’s spiritual life. Self-examination brings us face-to-face with our true spiritual condition, and when done sincerely, it leads to growth, repentance, and revival.

This process requires humility, honesty, and a desire to be aligned with God’s will. It is not meant to condemn, but to correct and restore. Just as a doctor checks vital signs to ensure health, so must we check our spiritual health regularly, using God’s Word as the standard.

1. THE BIBLICAL CALL TO SELF-EXAMINATION

God repeatedly calls His people to examine their hearts and lives.

a) A Command from Scripture

Paul’s instruction in 2 Corinthians 13:5 is a clear command, not a suggestion.

b) A Proof of Genuine Faith

Self-examination helps confirm whether we are truly in the faith.

c) Prevents Spiritual Deception

Without it, we can be deceived into thinking we’re fine when we’re far from God (Revelation 3:17).

d) Draws Us to Repentance

It reveals areas where repentance and realignment with God are needed.

e) Biblical Example: David’s heartfelt cry in Psalm 139:23-24 is a model of sincere self-examination.

2. AREAS TO EXAMINE IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

There are key aspects of our lives that require regular spiritual scrutiny.

a) Faith and Belief System

Are we still holding to the truth of the gospel?

b) Motives and Intentions

Do we serve God for love or for gain? (Hebrews 4:12)

c) Speech and Conduct

Do our words and actions reflect Christ? (James 1:26)

d) Prayer and Devotional Life

How vibrant is our relationship with God in secret?

e) Biblical Example: The Corinthians’ misuse of the Lord’s Supper in 1 Corinthians 11:28 showed their need for examination.

3. THE DANGER OF NEGLECTING SELF-EXAMINATION

Ignoring spiritual check-ups can lead to serious consequences.

a) Spiritual Blindness

One can drift from God and not realise it (Hebrews 2:1).

b) Religious Hypocrisy

People may act spiritual but lack true righteousness (Matthew 23:27-28).

c) Stunted Growth

Without reflection, we can’t grow into Christlikeness.

d) Judgment from God

God disciplines those who refuse correction (1 Corinthians 11:31-32).

e) Biblical Example: Samson did not realise the Lord had departed from him (Judges 16:20).

4. THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN SELF-EXAMINATION

The Spirit enables us to see ourselves through God's eyes.

a) Conviction of Sin

The Holy Spirit highlights what is not right in us (John 16:8).

b) Guides Us into Truth

He leads us into deeper knowledge of God and self (John 16:13).

c) Gives Grace for Change

Self-examination is not enough without the power to change.

d) Affirms Our Identity

The Spirit confirms that we are children of God (Romans 8:16).

e) Biblical Example: Peter was convicted and restored by the Lord (Luke 22:61-62; John 21:15-17).

5. PRACTICAL STEPS FOR EFFECTIVE SELF-EXAMINATION

Self-examination must be intentional and Spirit-led.

a) Set Aside Quiet Time

Create a space to hear from God without distraction.

b) Use the Word of God as Mirror

Let the Bible reveal your true state (James 1:22-25).

c) Be Honest with Yourself

Avoid excuses and justifications.

d) Respond with Repentance and Prayer

Don’t just observe—act on what is revealed.

e) Biblical Example: The Prodigal Son “came to himself” and changed direction (Luke 15:17-20).

CONCLUSION:

Self-examination is not meant to discourage but to awaken us to the need for spiritual renewal. It is an act of wisdom to check our spiritual alignment often. Just as we routinely assess our health or finances, our walk with God deserves even more attention.

When believers examine themselves with humility and openness to the Holy Spirit, they position themselves for growth, restoration, and fruitfulness. It is time to look inward, return to the cross, and allow God to refine us for His glory.

PRAYER POINTS:

1.  Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that displeases You.

2.  Help me to examine myself daily and walk in truth.

3.  Deliver me from every form of self-deception and spiritual pride.

4.  Restore my fellowship with You, O Lord.

5.  Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.

6.  Let the fire of revival burn again in my soul.

7.  Holy Spirit, lead me into deeper intimacy with God.
