Preach Christmas week
This sermon explores the plea for increased faith, emphasizing faith as a continuous journey of seeking, growing, and surrendering to God.
Welcome, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, to this gathering of hearts and minds, united by our shared love for our Savior and our desire to grow in our understanding of His Word. We find ourselves here, not by accident, but by divine appointment, called together to examine the profound message contained within the sacred pages of the Holy Bible.
The passage we turn to today is Luke 17:5, a verse that speaks directly to the essence of our Christian walk. It reads, 'The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith!'' This simple, yet profound plea, voiced by the apostles, resonates deeply within our hearts. How often have we found ourselves whispering, or even shouting, this very plea in the quiet corners of our own lives? How often have we yearned for an increase in faith as we navigate the tumultuous seas of life?
In the words of the great preacher, Charles Spurgeon, 'Faith is the samurai sword that cuts down doubts and fears.' It is the beacon that guides us through the darkest nights, the anchor that holds us steady amidst life's storms. It is the cornerstone of our relationship with God, the conduit through which we experience His grace, His mercy, and His love.
Today, we will delve into the depths of this plea for increased faith, seeking to understand what it means to foster faith through the Word, to fortify belief in the unseen, and to fulfill promises through faith. As we embark on this exploration, let us remember that faith is not a destination, but a journey, a continuous process of seeking, growing, and surrendering to the Lord.
Let us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you today with hearts open and minds receptive to your Word. We ask that you guide us as we seek to understand this message. May our exploration of this passage deepen our faith and draw us closer to you. We pray for wisdom and discernment as we navigate this journey of faith. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
The Word of God is a living, breathing entity. It is a source of life, a wellspring of wisdom, and a guide for our daily walk. When we immerse ourselves in the Word, we are not merely reading a collection of ancient texts. We are engaging in a divine dialogue with the Creator of the universe.
In the sacred pages of the Bible, we encounter the God who loved us so much that He sent His only Son to die for us. We meet the Savior who laid down His life to redeem us. We hear the voice of the Spirit who dwells within us, guiding us into all truth. The Word of God is a treasure trove of divine revelations, a banquet of spiritual nourishment, and a roadmap for our spiritual journey.
The first aspect we need to consider is the transformative power of the Word. When we approach the Bible with a humble and teachable spirit, it has the power to change us from the inside out. It challenges our worldly perspectives, confronts our sinful tendencies, and inspires us to live lives that reflect the love and grace of God.
The Word of God is an active force that reads us. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires, revealing who we truly are. As the writer of Hebrews puts it, 'For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart' (Hebrews 4:12).
Next is the instructive nature of the Word. The Bible is our ultimate guide for life. It provides us with the principles we need to navigate the complexities of life in a fallen world. It teaches us how to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and how to love our neighbor as ourselves. It shows us how to walk in righteousness, how to practice justice, and how to live in peace with all people.
The Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. It illuminates the way before us, showing us where to go and warning us of dangers along the way. As the Psalmist declares, 'Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path' (Psalm 119:105).
The third aspect we need to consider is the comforting presence of the Word. In times of trouble, the Bible is a source of comfort and consolation. It reassures us of God's unfailing love, His constant presence, and His sovereign control over all things. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles, that our sufferings are not in vain, and that our God is a refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
The Word of God is a balm for our wounded souls, a shelter in the time of storm, and a rock on which we can stand when the ground beneath us is shaking. As the prophet Isaiah assures us, 'So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it' (Isaiah 55:11).
Finally is the empowering effect of the Word. The Bible is not just a book to be read. It is a weapon to be wielded. It is the sword of the Spirit, the offensive weapon in our spiritual armor. It equips us for the spiritual battles we face, enabling us to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy and to proclaim the truth of God in a world that is often hostile to it.
The Word of God is a powerful tool in the hands of a believer. It can break down strongholds, demolish arguments, and bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. As the Apostle Paul exhorts us, 'Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God' (Ephesians 6:17).
Transition. The Word of God is not just a book. It is a life-giving force, a transformative power, an instructive guide, a comforting presence, and an empowering tool. It is the means by which we foster our faith, grow in our understanding of God, and live out our calling as followers of Christ. May we treasure it, study it, meditate on it, and apply it in our daily lives.
