INTRODUCTION:
The fear of the Lord is one of the most misunderstood yet powerful spiritual principles in Scripture. It does not mean being afraid of God, but having a deep reverence, honour, and awe for Him that governs one’s thoughts, decisions, and actions. Where the fear of the Lord is present, divine help flows naturally and consistently.
Many believers desire divine intervention but resist divine instructions. The fear of the Lord aligns the heart to obey God even when obedience is costly or inconvenient. Scripture reveals that divine help is not sustained by emotional Christianity but by reverential submission to God’s authority.
In a generation where moral standards are weakened and compromise is celebrated, the fear of the Lord distinguishes those who walk in divine favour from those who struggle spiritually. Those who fear the Lord do not live carelessly; they walk circumspectly, attracting divine guidance, preservation, and help.
1. THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE FOUNDATION OF DIVINE HELP
The fear of the Lord establishes the spiritual environment where divine help thrives.
a) Reverence Establishes Spiritual Order — Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, giving direction and clarity for life decisions.
b) Fear of God Sustains Divine Confidence — Proverbs 14:26
Those who fear God walk with bold assurance because they are aligned with His will.
c) Reverence Attracts Divine Protection — Psalm 34:7
God assigns angelic protection to those who honour Him.
d) Fear of the Lord Guards Against Error — Proverbs 16:6
Reverence keeps believers from paths that sabotage destiny.
Biblical Example:
Joseph feared God and refused immorality, and divine help preserved him and promoted him (Genesis 39:9-21).
2. THE FEAR OF THE LORD PRODUCES OBEDIENCE AND HUMILITY
True reverence for God manifests through obedience and a teachable spirit.
a) Obedience Is Proof of Reverence — Ecclesiastes 12:13
The fear of the Lord is expressed by keeping God’s commandments.
b) Humility Attracts Divine Grace — James 4:6
God resists pride but releases grace to the humble.
c) Fear of God Disciplines Behaviour — Proverbs 8:13
Reverence causes believers to hate evil and reject compromise.
d) Obedience Sustains Divine Backing — Deuteronomy 28:1-2
Continuous obedience ensures continuous divine assistance.
Biblical Example:
Noah feared God, obeyed divine instructions, and divine help preserved him and his household (Genesis 6:9-22).
3. THE FEAR OF THE LORD RELEASES WISDOM AND DIRECTION
God reveals secrets and direction to those who honour Him.
a) Fear of the Lord Unlocks Divine Secrets — Psalm 25:14
God confides in those who fear Him.
b) Reverence Sharpens Spiritual Discernment — Isaiah 33:6
Stability and wisdom flow from fearing the Lord.
c) Fear of God Preserves Spiritual Sensitivity — Proverbs 9:10
Understanding increases where reverence is sustained.
d) Divine Direction Prevents Regret — Psalm 32:8
God guides those who submit to His leadership.
Biblical Example:
Daniel feared God, rejected defilement, and divine help granted him wisdom and understanding (Daniel 1:8-20).
4. ABSENCE OF THE FEAR OF THE LORD HINDERS DIVINE HELP
Where reverence is lacking, divine help is resisted or withdrawn.
a) Carelessness Weakens Spiritual Covering — Romans 3:18
Lack of fear leads to reckless living and spiritual vulnerability.
b) Compromise Invites Divine Displeasure — Isaiah 59:1-2
Sin separates believers from divine intervention.
c) Pride Repels Divine Assistance — Proverbs 16:18
Pride precedes destruction and spiritual downfall.
d) Disregard for God’s Word Blocks Help — 1 Samuel 15:22-23
Partial obedience equals total disobedience before God.
Biblical Example:
Saul lost divine help and kingship because he lacked reverence for God’s instructions (1 Samuel 15:26-28).
CONCLUSION:
The fear of the Lord is not optional for believers who desire sustained divine help. It is the spiritual foundation that upholds obedience, wisdom, humility, and protection. Where reverence is restored, divine help flows unhindered.
As you cultivate the fear of the Lord in your daily walk, God will secure you, guide you, and preserve your destiny. Honour God in private and public, and His help will never depart from your life.
