Our Scripture today comes from Colossians 4:6, which says,

"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

You might be wondering, "What does it mean for our speech to be 'seasoned with salt'?" Well, we're going to explore that in-depth today, as well as how to live as the salt of the earth. As Christians, we're called to be different – to stand out and be a light in this world. And one way we can do that is through the words we speak and the tone of our conversations.

I came across a quote from C.S. Lewis that captures the essence of today's message. He said, "Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say 'infinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite." That's a powerful reminder for us to be intentional and thoughtful with our words.

As Christians, we are called to be intentional with the language we use, ensuring that our words are both truthful and edifying. Proverbs 16:24 tells us, "Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." When we speak with grace, our words have the power to bring healing and encouragement to those around us.

Conversely, careless or harsh words can cause harm and discord. Therefore, it is crucial that we take the time to consider the impact of our words before we speak, seeking to build others up rather than tear them down.

It's not just about the words we say, but also how we say them. A gentle and kind tone can convey love and compassion, while a harsh or critical tone can cause others to feel judged or belittled. We are called to emulate the love and gentleness of Christ in our interactions with others.

Colossians 3:12-14 reminds us, "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." By adopting a tone of gentleness and kindness in our speech, we can create an atmosphere of love and unity, reflecting the heart of Christ to those around us.

In order to communicate effectively and with grace, we must first be willing to hear and understand the perspectives of those we are speaking with. James 1:19 instructs us, "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." By actively listening to others, we demonstrate humility and respect, showing that we value their thoughts and feelings. This creates an environment of trust and openness, allowing for more meaningful and grace-filled conversations.

In our conversations with others, it is important that we seek to put ourselves in their shoes, striving to understand their emotions and experiences. This empathetic approach allows us to communicate with compassion and sensitivity, ensuring that our words are not only truthful but also loving and supportive.

Romans 12:15 encourages us to "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." By practicing empathy in our speech, we can better connect with others and share in their joys and sorrows, reflecting the love of Christ in our relationships.

As Christians, we are called to be honest and transparent in our communication, but we must also be mindful of the way we deliver the truth. Ephesians 4:15 tells us, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ." When we speak the truth with grace and love, we not only foster healthy relationships, but we also contribute to the growth and maturity of the body of Christ.

Lastly, graceful speech involves using our words to glorify God and share the gospel with others. As followers of Christ, we have the incredible privilege and responsibility to share the good news of Jesus with those around us. By speaking with grace and intention, we can effectively communicate the love and hope found in Christ, drawing others to Him.

1 Peter 3:15 encourages us, "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." Through our graceful speech, we can be powerful witnesses for Christ, shining His light in a dark world.
