VIII. MAIN BODY:

There are 2 primary reasons mentioned in this verse why we need to investigate the scriptures:

A. Trust that we have eternal life through them

"You search and investigate and pore over the Scriptures diligently, because you suppose and trust that you have eternal life through them."

Search or "ereunao" from the Greek which means:

1. to seek

2. to investigate - to search into; to inquire and examine into with care and accuracy; to find out by careful disquisition [Webster's Dictionary]

Scriptures or "graphe" from the Greek which means:

1. a document

2. holy Writ (it's contents or a statement in it)

Eternal or "aionios" from the Greek which means:

1. perpetual

2. forever

3. everlasting

Life or "zoe" from the Greek which means: life.

Our eternal life starts here on the earth, because we can still investigate and study the WORD of GOD while we're still alive.

What is eternal life as defined by the bible?

John 17:3 (Amplified Bible)

17:3 And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.

2 Peter 1:19-21 (Amplified Bible)

1:19 And we have the prophetic word [made] firmer still. You will do well to pay close attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dismal (squalid and dark) place, until the day breaks through [the gloom] and the Morning Star rises (comes into being) in your hearts.

1:20 [Yet] first [you must] understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is [a matter] of any personal or private or special interpretation (loosening, solving).

1:21 For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so—it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 3:16 (Amplified Bible)

3:16 Let the word [spoken by] Christ (the Messiah) have its home [in your hearts and minds] and dwell in you in [all its] richness, as you teach and admonish and train one another in all insight and intelligence and wisdom [in spiritual things, and as you sing] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to God with [His] grace in your hearts.

Illustration: A very rich young lady riding a luxurious yacht and cruising the sea, shouted "this is the life!" but is this real life?

Real life only lies at the hand of JESUS.

John 10:10 (Amplified Bible)

10:10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

B. These scriptures testify about JESUS

"And these [very Scriptures] testify about Me!"

John 20:31 (Amplified Bible)

20:31 But these are written (recorded) in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ (the Anointed One), the Son of God, and that through believing and cleaving to and trusting and relying upon Him you may have life through (in) His name [through Who He is].

Psalms 2:7 (Amplified Bible)

2:7 I will declare the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, You are My Son; this day [I declare] I have begotten You.

2 Peter 1:17-18 (Amplified Bible)
