Contributed by Noah Balcombe on Jun 30, 2005 (message contributor)
Summary: If we have accepted Christ as our Lord then we are next called to serve. Love God & love others through serving God and serving others.
SAVED TO SERVE
Great Commandment
Matt 22:36
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " ’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ’Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Simplified: Love God & Love Others
What is love?
Love: Protecting & Providing
Love begins with an attitude…
Philippians 2:30a
“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”
Why is this difficult?
John 13:34
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
How did Christ love us?
Our response: Take up our cross
Mathew 16:24 NLT
“Then Jesus said to the disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.
Our action: Live for Him
Rom 12:1-2
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask?
It just makes sense…
“The best result will come from everyone in the group doing what’s best for themselves and the group”
- John Nash
Philippians 2:30b
“Let each of you look out not only for his interests, but also for the interests of others.”
HOW?!?
Lead by Example
“Preach the Gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.”
- Francis of Assisi
1 Corinthians 11:1
“And you should follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s”
Find a need and fill it
Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”
1 Pet 4:10
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms”.
