Salvation Is Free (But not Cheap)

March 15, 2015 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: Salvation is a free gift of God that came at great expense to Jesus.

Focus Passage: Ephesians 2:8-10

Introduction: When someone gives their friend a gift, it is because they love them; not necessarily because they deserve it. Can you imagine a person trying to be nice just in order to receive a gift? Or what if the person receives the gift then pulls out their checkbook to pay the person back. It would be an insult.

I. Salvation is through grace, not works

a. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, (Ephesians 2:8 NASB)

b. Faith is the empty hands with which we reach up to receive grace.

c. You cannot earn your way to Heaven by being good or doing good.

d. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)

II. Salvation is a gift from God

a. it is the gift of God; (Ephesians 2:8 NASB) not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:9 NASB)

b. It is given because God loves you and you trust Him

c. Jesus paid the highest price for your salvation; it cost Him everything

d. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but

have eternal life. (John 3:16 NASB)

III. Salvation brings about good works

a. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10 NASB)

b. We do good works BECAUSE we are saved; not to get our salvation

c. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NASB)

.

d. Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. (Romans 12:1 NASB)
