Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Encourages Christians to deepen their belief, strengthen their discipleship, and share the good news of Jesus Christ's love and salvation.
Good morning, beloved family of God. As we gather here today, we are united in our shared faith, bound by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and driven by our desire to live in His image. Today, we find ourselves standing at the crossroads of belief and discipleship, ready to bear witness to the good news of Christ's love and salvation.
In the words of Robert South, "A good character when established is not easily overthrown." Our character, dear friends, is shaped and molded by our belief in Christ, by our discipleship, and by our willingness to share His good news. This is the inheritance we strive for - an inheritance not of this world but of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Today, we turn to the Gospel of Mark, chapter 9, verses 30-39:
[Read passage]
As we prepare our hearts and minds to receive God's word today, let us bow our heads in prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for this day, for the opportunity to gather in Your name, and for the gift of Your word. As we reflect on the teachings of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray for wisdom and understanding. May Your Holy Spirit guide us as we seek to deepen our belief, strengthen our discipleship, and share the good news of Your love and salvation. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
We find ourselves drawn to the teachings of Jesus, to His message of love, forgiveness, and salvation. This is not a mere coincidence or a simple matter of personal preference. It is a universal need, a deep-seated longing within each of us to connect with something greater than ourselves, to find meaning and purpose in our lives, and to experience the transformative power of divine love.
Mark 9:30-39 provides us with an understanding of this need: Jesus, in His wisdom, is teaching His disciples about His impending death and resurrection. This is a difficult lesson, one that the disciples struggle to understand. Yet, it is a crucial part of their belief in Christ. It is through His death and resurrection that we are saved, that we are given the promise of eternal life. This belief is not a luxury or an optional extra. It is a necessity, a vital part of our spiritual well-being.
Jesus teaches about the importance of humility and service: He tells His disciples that "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." This is a powerful message, one that challenges our worldly notions of success and power. It reminds us that in the Kingdom of Heaven, greatness is not measured by wealth, status, or power, but by our willingness to serve others, to put their needs before our own. This is not just a moral or ethical principle. It is a fundamental aspect of our belief in Christ. It is through service that we express our love for God and for our fellow human beings.
Jesus emphasizes the value of welcoming and accepting others in His name: He tells His disciples, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me." This is not just a lesson in hospitality or kindness. It is a call to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of every person, to see Christ in each other, and to treat each other with the love and respect that we would show to Christ Himself. This is an essential part of our belief in Christ. It is through our interactions with others that we demonstrate our faith, that we live out the teachings of Jesus.
Jesus teaches His disciples about the inclusivity of His ministry: When John tells Him about someone driving out demons in His name, Jesus responds, "Do not stop him. For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me." This is not just a lesson in tolerance or acceptance. It is a reminder that the good news of Christ's love and salvation is for everyone, regardless of their background, their beliefs, or their previous actions. This is a crucial part of our belief in Christ. It is through our openness and inclusivity that we reflect the universal nature of Christ's love, that we fulfill our mission to spread the good news to all corners of the earth.
