Introduction: The first marriage is a revelation of both God and man. It shows us the deep loving concern that God has for us and also tells us how we should respond to his concern in loving obedience. Sanjay and Joanna you must know that God loves you and cares very much for your needs. He wants you to trust Him and obey Him in your marriage.
I God’s Loving Concern
i) Sees Adam’s need: Everything God made was good and this is the first thing that was not good. After naming all the animals, Adam was still lonely! God sees your need too!
ii) Determines to do something about it: God is proactive about Adam’s need. His concern moves him to positive action. He realizes that it is not good. If He can’t find a companion He will make one! Not just anyone but a suitable helper. God is doing something about your need too.
iii) Puts Adam into a deep sleep: This too reveals the loving concern of God. Anaesthesia for the first operation. Takes one rib but gives back a woman! He always gives back more than we can give Him!
iv) Brings Woman to the Man: God gave away the first bride. At the right time! God can surprise you!
II Man’s Obedient Response
i) Adam was faithful to his task: He named all the animals that were brought to him. His submission to God’s will gave him authority over them. When the woman was brought to him he named her too: wo-man.
ii) He was in a deep sleep: Adam had no role in the creation of the woman. She is fully God’s creation even though taken from man. There are times when God wants us out of the way! Even when we go through something painful, God is doing something wonderful.
iii) Leave and cleave: Man has to understand that marriage is the primary relationship. God did not make parent-child relation first; he made husband wife first.
iv) No shame in marriage: There is no shame in a person’s own body. In marriage it is the becoming of one flesh. Hence no shame! Transparency!
III God’s Love and Christ’s Response
i) God’s love caused him to see the need in our lives for a Saviour: This was not good that we had sinned and fallen short of God’s glory – separated from God.
ii) He looked for ways to redeem us: Go revealed to us His high standards and the right way but we could not keep it.
iii) His love expressed in Christ’s response: He came in His only begotten Son: Jesus. He like Adam went into the deep sleep of death on the cross whilst from His side flowed blood and water that purchased His bride. May your marriage reflect the beauty of God’s love and our response of obedience.
Conclusion:
Sanjay and Joanna as you marry today please be assured that God is greatly concerned for you. He loves you! Decide today to respond in obedience and you will be blessed beyond your dreams.
