Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explores living freely in God's kingdom, building our lives with grace and ease, and the essential role of rest in spiritual growth.
Hello, Church family! It's so wonderful to see all of you here today, ready and eager to dig into God's Word together.
Before we get started, let's take a moment to center ourselves with a passage from the book of Matthew. It's a verse that many of us have heard countless times, but I think it's one that we can never hear too often. It's Matthew 11:30, and it says,
"For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Isn't that just a breath of fresh air in this busy, hustle-and-bustle world we live in? It's a reminder that when we're yoked with Jesus, we're not carrying our burdens alone. Instead, we're living in the freedom and lightness that comes from being in God's kingdom.
I'm reminded of a quote from Henry Drummond, "Rest is not a hallowed feeling that comes over us in church; it is the repose of a heart set deep in God." Isn't that beautiful? It's a reminder that rest isn't just about physical relaxation—it's about finding our rest in God.
So, let's bow our heads and open our hearts in prayer before we get started.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing us together today to learn from Your Word. We ask that you open our hearts and minds to the truths you have for us today. Help us to understand what it means to live freely in Your kingdom, to build with grace and ease, and to find our rest in You. We ask this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Alright, folks. Let's get into it!
When we think about the kingdom of God, we often imagine it as a far-off place, a heavenly realm that we'll reach someday in the future. But the truth is, the kingdom of God isn't just a future promise—it's a present reality. It's here, right now, in our midst. And we're invited to live in it, not just as passive observers, but as active participants.
What does it mean to live in God's kingdom: It means to live under His rule and reign, to submit to His authority, and to align our lives with His purposes. It means to live in a way that reflects His character and values, to seek His will in all things, and to strive to bring His kingdom to earth as it is in heaven.
Not about following a set of rules or meeting a list of requirements: It's not about trying to earn God's favor or prove our worth. Instead, it's about living in the freedom of God's grace, knowing that we're loved and accepted just as we are.
Not a license to do whatever we want: It's the freedom to be who we were created to be. It's the freedom to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. It's the freedom to live a life of purpose and meaning, a life that brings glory to God and blessing to others.
Recognizing our identity as God's beloved children: In the kingdom of God, we're not slaves or servants, but sons and daughters. We're not outsiders or foreigners, but citizens and heirs. We're not defined by our past mistakes or failures, but by God's love and grace. This identity is not something we earn or achieve, but something we receive as a gift. And it's this identity that sets us free to live as God's beloved children, secure in His love and confident in His promises.
Embracing our calling as God's ambassadors: As citizens of God's kingdom, we're called to represent Him in the world, to reflect His character and values, and to share His love and grace with others. This calling isn't a burden or obligation, but a privilege and joy. It's not about doing things for God, but about being with God, knowing Him and making Him known. And it's this calling that sets us free to live a life of purpose and significance, a life that makes a difference in the world.
Trusting in God's provision: In the kingdom of God, we're not dependent on our own resources or abilities, but on God's abundance and generosity. We're not worried about scarcity or lack, but confident in God's provision. We're not striving to get more, but content with what we have. And it's this trust in God's provision that sets us free to live a life of simplicity and generosity, a life that reflects the abundance of God's kingdom.
Resting in God's sovereignty: In the kingdom of God, we're not in control, but God is. We're not anxious about the future, but at peace in the present. We're not trying to figure everything out, but trusting in God's wisdom and timing. And it's this rest in God's sovereignty that sets us free to live a life of faith and trust, a life that is anchored in the unchanging truth of God's Word.
