Summary: The Message to repent is found throughout the entire scriptures
The message of repentance goes all the way through the bible. Moses preached to the children of Israel to Repent, Jonah was to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh
Matthew 4:17 (ESV)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Mark 6:12 (KJV) And they went out, and preached that men should repent. .3
Acts 3:19 (KJV) Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
A rabbi was walking along with some of his students when one asked, "Rabbi, when should a man Repent?" The rabbi replied, "You should repent on the last day of your life." The student went on: "But we can not be sure which day will be our last." To that the rabbi smiled and said, "Then the answer is simple. Repent now."
A Sunday School teacher once asked a class what was meant by the word "repentance." A little boy put up his hand and said, "It is being sorry for your sins." A little girl also raised her hand and said, "It is being sorry enough to quit."
Repentance allows me to hate sin, not just the consequences or the effects.
Not enough to mope or be depressed Repentance is taking God’s point of view
Admit you’re going the wrong direction -
Basic gospel message isn’t I’m OK you’re OK, but Repent - the kingdom is right behind you - you’re going the wrong direction, youll miss it
Repentance is what makes religion more than ritual. -- David Smith
Many people say, I’m turning over a new leaf, or I’m going to try harder….
Repentance is a serious change of mind leading to a change of direction. The Greek word (metanoia) means "to change ones mind" while the Hebrew word implies a change of direction
Repentance is not just being sorry, its about change
Our society has the wrong view of sin
• We call sin Chance .. God calls it Choice
• We call sin Fascinating .. God calls it Fatal
• We call sin Trivial .. God calls it Tragic
2 Cor. 7:10 (ESV)
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Acts 19:19 (ESV)
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.
1 Cor. 6:9-11 (ESV)
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, [10] nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. [11] And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Without repentance a person cannot be saved.
Luke 13:3 (KJV) I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Acts 17:30 (KJV) And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
C.H. Spurgeon, the powerful English preacher, said the following about the need for repentance:
People seem to jump into faith very quickly nowadays...I hope my old friend repentance is not dead. I am desperately in love with repentance; it seems to be the twin sister of faith.
"I do not myself understand much about dry-eyed faith; I know that I came to Christ by the way of weeping-cross...When I came to Calvary by faith, it was with great weeping and supplication, confessing my transgressions, and desiring to find salvation in Jesus, and in Jesus only."
"Repentance is to leave
The sins we loved before,
And show that we in earnest grieve,
By doing so no more."
God Gives Everyone A Chance to Repent
Rev. 2:21 (ESV) I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.
2 Peter 3:9 (KJV) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
It is Gods goodness that draws people to repent
