Remember The Sabbath Day
Contributed by Dwight Davis on Nov 6, 2023 (message contributor)
Summary: This sermon takes a careful and honest look at what the Fourth Commandment is saying to Christians today. Does there still remain a " Sabbath rest for the people of God."?
C. A Sign: The Sabbath is a sign between us and God that He is the One who makes us holy and that He is our God. (Exodus 31:12,13; Ezekiel 20:19,20)
1. Exodus 31:12,13 “Then the LORD said to Moses, 13 “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. ‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. 15 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.’ When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.”
2. Ezekiel 20:19,20 “I am the LORD your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 20 Keep my _____________ holy, that they may be a _____________ between us. Then you will _____________ that I am the LORD your God.” (read also verses 11 -21)
D. “Spiritual Israel”
1. Galatians 3:26-29 “You are all sons of God through __________ in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither ___________ nor _________________, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are _____________ seed, and ______________ according to the promise.”
2. Galatians 3:6-9 “Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 7 Understand, then, that those who believe are __________________of Abraham. 8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who have ______________are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.”
It is important to realize, that although the good news of the Gospel message was entrusted to the Jewish nation first, its promises and blessings were always intended to go to “all nations.” This allows anyone to become an heir to the promises by faith in Jesus Christ. All believers, both Jew and Gentile, are part of “Spiritual Israel.”
V. Was the Sabbath commandment abolished at the Cross?
A. Although the Sabbath was instituted before sin and is one of the few Commandments that would still be relevant in a world without sin, many still insist, that because of Christ’s sacrifice for sin, we no longer are “bound” to this commandment. This is completely contradictory to both common sense and biblical principle. To change or disregard the fourth commandment is to take away from God’s Holy and perfect Law—even when He sternly warns us not to! (Deuteronomy 4:2; Revelation 22:18,19)
