Contributed by Rev. Samuel Arimoro on Aug 26, 2025 (message contributor)
Summary: The altar of the Lord is the meeting point between God and man. To secure divine presence, power, and victory, every believer must raise and maintain the altar of the Lord.
RAISING THE ALTAR OF THE LORD
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: 1 Kings 18:30
“And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.” (1 Kings 18:30, KJV)
Supporting Texts: Genesis 8:20-21; Exodus 20:24; Judges 6:24-26; Psalm 50:5; Hebrews 13:10
INTRODUCTION:
In the Old Testament, altars were sacred places where sacrifices were made and where God met with His people. The altar symbolized communion, covenant, and consecration. Whenever men raised an altar to the Lord, His presence and power were revealed in mighty ways.
Sadly, many altars of the Lord have been neglected, broken down, or replaced with strange altars in our lives, families, and even nations. Elijah confronted Israel at Mount Carmel, but before fire could fall, the altar of the Lord had to be repaired.
Beloved, if you desire God’s fire, victory, and glory in your life, then you must raise the altar of the Lord. A strong altar life guarantees divine preservation, supernatural victories, and covenant blessings.
1. WHAT IS AN ALTAR?
The altar is the place of divine-human exchange.
a) A place of sacrifice (Genesis 8:20-21)
Noah built an altar, and God smelled a sweet savour.
b) A place of covenant renewal (Genesis 12:7)
Abraham built altars wherever God appeared to him.
c) A place of encounter with God (Judges 6:24)
Gideon built an altar and experienced Jehovah-Shalom.
d) A place of worship and prayer (Psalm 141:2)
Our prayers rise as incense from the altar.
Biblical Example: Abraham raised altars at different stages of his journey, securing God’s covenant promises at every stage (Genesis 13:18).
2. THE POWER OF RAISING THE ALTAR OF THE LORD
Whenever an altar is raised unto God, His power is released.
a) It establishes divine covenant (Exodus 24:4-8)
Israel entered covenant with God through blood on the altar.
b) It brings divine fire and presence (1 Kings 18:38)
Fire fell when Elijah raised the altar.
c) It breaks the influence of strange altars (Judges 6:25-26)
Gideon destroyed Baal’s altar and raised one for the Lord.
d) It guarantees divine preservation (Psalm 50:5)
God gathers His saints by covenant through sacrifice.
Biblical Example: Solomon raised an altar by sacrificing abundantly, and God appeared to him with wisdom and glory (2 Chronicles 7:1-2).
3. HOW TO RAISE THE ALTAR OF THE LORD TODAY
Every believer must raise and sustain altars in different dimensions.
a) Personal altar of prayer and devotion (Daniel 6:10)
Daily communion with God builds a strong spiritual life.
b) Family altar of worship (Joshua 24:15)
Families that pray together stay aligned with God.
c) Altar of the Word (Colossians 3:16)
The Word of God must dwell richly in us.
d) Altar of sacrifice and obedience (Romans 12:1)
Presenting our lives as living sacrifices is the highest altar.
Biblical Example: Cornelius raised an altar of prayer and giving, and his memorial rose to God, bringing salvation to his house (Acts 10:1-4).
4. BLESSINGS OF RAISING THE ALTAR OF THE LORD
When the altar is raised, God’s glory is revealed.
a) Divine fire and revival (Leviticus 6:13)
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar.
b) Victory over the enemy (Judges 6:28-32)
Gideon’s altar overthrew Baal.
c) Supernatural provision (Genesis 22:14)
Abraham’s altar became Jehovah Jireh.
d) Generational blessings (Psalm 112:1-2)
Families that raise altars secure posterity.
Biblical Example: After Elijah repaired the altar, fire fell, the people turned back to God, and victory over Baal was established (1 Kings 18:38-40).
CONCLUSION:
The strength of your altar determines the strength of your spiritual life. A broken altar leads to weakness, defeat, and manipulation by strange powers. But when the altar of the Lord is raised, fire falls, enemies scatter, and God’s glory is revealed.
Declare: “Today, I raise the altar of the Lord in my life and family. No strange altar will prevail against me. The fire of God shall continually burn upon my altar.”
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Father, thank You for making me Your altar and dwelling place.
2. Lord, repair every broken altar in my life and family.
3. Father, let Your fire fall afresh upon my prayer altar.
4. Lord, help me to build a strong altar of obedience and sacrifice.
5. Father, overthrow every strange altar speaking against me.
6. Lord, let my family altar bring generational blessings.
7. Father, empower me to keep the fire burning continually.
8. Lord, make my altar a place of encounter and revelation.
9. Father, release supernatural provision as I raise an altar unto You.
10. Lord, let the altar of the Lord in my life silence every altar of Baal.
