Introduction

Good morning, beloved. Today’s Scripture is a profound reminder of Jesus’ intimate connection with us as our Shepherd. In John 10:22-30, we see a picture of Jesus as both the provider of eternal security and the voice we are called to follow. But how do we hear this voice? How do we discern it amid the noise of life?

Let’s explore this question together and uncover the practical ways we can recognize, trust, and respond to the voice of God in our daily lives.

1. Hearing the Shepherd’s Voice: A Personal Journey

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27)

When Jesus says His sheep know His voice, He’s describing a relationship built on trust and familiarity. For us, hearing God’s voice doesn’t mean an audible call for everyone. It might be a nudge in our hearts, a Scripture that suddenly speaks to our situation, or wise counsel from someone we trust.

• Modern Example 1: Finding Your Unique Frequency

Imagine you’re trying to tune an old radio. It takes patience, small adjustments, and focused listening to lock onto the right station. God’s voice is like that; we have to tune out distractions and fine-tune our spirits through intentional time with Him.

• Modern Example 2: Prayer as a Two-Way Street

Too often, our prayers become monologues. We tell God our needs, fears, and desires but forget to pause and listen. It’s like having a one-sided phone conversation with a friend—you’re missing half the relationship!

Application: Prayer is a conversation. Yes, pour out your heart to God, but also practice silence afterward. Sit in His presence and listen. You may not hear words, but you might feel peace, clarity, or conviction.

2. The Practice of Hearing God’s Voice

Hearing God’s voice is different for everyone, and it takes practice. Like learning a language, it becomes clearer with time and effort.

• Practical Steps:

o Prayerful Listening: After you pray, take 2-5 minutes in silence. Start small and extend the time as you grow. Write down any impressions or thoughts that come to mind.

o Reading Scripture: God often speaks through His Word. A verse might leap off the page, giving you an answer or encouragement you didn’t expect.

o Community and Counsel: Sometimes God speaks through the wisdom of others. Don’t hesitate to share your journey with trusted spiritual mentors.

• Modern Example 3: Missing the Whisper

Think of someone who leaves voicemails instead of texting. You can miss their messages if you don’t check your voicemail app! God’s voice is often like that—a quiet whisper rather than a loud announcement. If we’re too busy, we can overlook it.

Application: Commit to intentionally checking for God’s “voicemails” daily through Scripture, prayer, and reflection.

3. Trusting the Shepherd’s Protection

"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand." (John 10:28)

In a world that feels unstable, this promise is a rock of comfort. Jesus assures us that His grip is stronger than our weaknesses or fears.

• Modern Example 4: The Parent’s Grip

Picture a parent holding their child’s hand as they cross a busy street. The child might pull, stumble, or even try to let go, but the parent’s grip remains firm. Jesus holds us like that—not because of our strength but because of His faithfulness.

• Application: Reflect on moments when life felt out of control, but God’s presence sustained you. Share these stories with others to build faith and remind yourself of His unwavering hold.

4. Embracing Unity with the Father and Son

"I and the Father are one." (John 10:30)

Jesus reveals His divine nature and unity with the Father, reminding us that following Him is a relationship of purpose and love.

• Modern Example 5: The Family Business

Imagine a family-owned business where each member has a role, reflecting shared values and working toward a common goal. As God’s children, we’re part of His family mission to spread love, truth, and hope.

• Application: Ask yourself, “How can I reflect God’s love in my daily life?” Look for opportunities to show kindness, serve others, and speak truth. This is how we participate in His work.

5. Overcoming the Challenge of Distraction

We live in a world that pulls us in a thousand directions—social media, work stress, family obligations. These distractions make it hard to hear God.

• Modern Example 6: Noise-Canceling Headphones

Think of noise-canceling headphones. They block out external noise so you can focus on the music or conversation you’re tuning into. Similarly, we need “spiritual noise-canceling” to focus on God. This might mean turning off the TV, stepping away from your phone, or finding a quiet place to pray.

Application: Set aside a daily “quiet time” to intentionally connect with God. Guard this time fiercely as a priority in your schedule.
