Summary: Todays lesson the woman who threw in the treasury gave all she could like our veterans all gave some, some gave all.
Mark 12: 38-44 “All gave some, some gave all”
1. The phrase “All Gave Some, Some Gave ALL”
• It is attributed to Korean War veteran and purple heart recipient Howard William Osterkamp from Dent, Ohio.
• He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953, during which he experienced heavy combat in Korea with his unit, the C Company, 5th Regimental Combat Team. For his service, Howard Osterkamp was awarded a Purple Heart.
• Upon being injured, Sergeant Osterkamp was taken to Army doctors who misdiagnosed his injury. Osterkamp was sent back to the front lines with his leg broken in two places and stayed there for approximately four months. He spent a total of nine months on the front line during the Korean war.
2. All gave some and some gave all. We learn a lot from these individuals they are folks of great courage, great faith, great resolve, and great passion.
• One comment said: Courage is required to defend and risk death or injury for a greater cause.
• One Veteran said, Courage is the drive that thrusts veterans through their difficult journeys.
• Today’s Gospel we find a woman who gives us great courage Jesus “watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
• The bible told us she put in two copper coins. She had the courage to feel its her duty to put in the treasury Kind of like our veterans they feel it’s their duty to serve God and country
3. This woman She had great courage and great Faith, she was one of the “some who gave all”.
• Complete Trust in God Jesus said about a centurions faith , “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel,”
• 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. (I want you to see great Faith ) Note he called them look at this.
4. This woman was one who gave all she had Great courage, great faith, and she had great resolve.
• She like all veterans most have steadfastness or resolve. Paul writes, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord”
• She was committed to give all 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
• She had to be determined, to do this. Determined to have great resolve I can’t quit I can’t give up.
5. Yes my friends all gave some, some gave all we appreciate our veterans who have great courage, faith, resolve, and great passion
• The lady today gave all. The veterans gave all and Jesus gave all
• Jesus gave his life he had such a passion for all He had an urge, desire, hunger,
• His hunger for Calvary gave us the freedom to be saved.
• As we look at the mites this woman had, she gave all she could.
• So many have been called to serve, to offer their lives for others without any certainty of success or perfection. The way, in which so many serve in the dangers of conflict and war is much like the woman in the gospel, giving all she could.
• Osterkamp said all gave some, some gave all, and we are asked to give all we can.
• Like the woman in the gospel, in some ways, we ask, how will we offer ourselves to do the work that Jesus calls us to do in his name? This is the only real assurance we have – the Love of God, in Jesus Christ. Jesus asks us to give us, to give us all we can.
