(Proverbs 14:4) “Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.”

PROLOGUE

As I start this message, I recall a sermon I delivered from my 18-wheeler's cab, titled “The Strength of the Ox.” I referenced Proverbs 14:4 and Proverbs 15:17, which portray the ox as a vital source of strength and labor, responsible for pulling the plow that prepares the land for planting seeds. This symbolizes the pastor's role in encouraging spiritual readiness within their congregation.

In contrast, the image of an ox or pastor that cannot fulfill its purpose, such as an over-controlling deacon board, raises important questions about growth and strength in the spiritual lives of their congregation.

The image of a pastor plowing reminds me of the powerful message in Hosea 10:12, which talks about breaking up our fallow ground.

Just as a farmer prepares the soil for a fruitful harvest, we are called to cultivate the fallow ground of our hearts and lives. The call to “seek the Lord” signifies not only a desire for spiritual growth but also an urgent plea to actively pursue a relationship with Him.

It reminds us that this pursuit is vital, as only through His divine intervention can we hope to uncover the hidden struggles within our hearts and receive His blessings, much like the refreshing rain that brings life and renewal to the earth.

This message takes me back to the earlier days when pastors delivered powerful and heartfelt sermons. Their passionate preaching and dedication to nurturing and growing the spiritual lives of their congregations are a testament to their value and importance in our lives, much like plowing a field.

In summary, think about how the person plowing a field must be cautious of animal droppings, and the signs of a pastor’s toil are apparent in the expensive hairstyles and hairpins scattered around, often seen in the congregation, as well as the tear-stained altars.

These signs symbolize a pastor's dedication to breaking through the hardened hearts of their flock, preparing the ground for new growth and spiritual renewal.

"THE PASTOR'S ROLE IN THE FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY."

If we see the role of a pastor in the five-fold ministry as a building, they would be the protective walls. Pastors are not only essential to the functioning of a ministry, but they also act as its protective walls, ensuring the safety and security of the flock.

The pastor's main duty is to look after the needs, safety, and protection of the sheep entrusted to them by God. They are responsible to God for the spiritual health of everyone in their flock, making sure they get a balanced and nourishing diet of the Word of God.

Pastors have a shepherd's heart for their flock, a special ability that lets them show love and patience to help their sheep grow. Remember, no one can care for the sheep entrusted to them better than a pastor.

When we explore the pastor's role within the five-fold ministry, it can be helpful to compare it to the human hand. Each finger symbolizes a distinct function that contributes to the church's overall purpose.

1. The Apostle is like the thumb. Just as the thumb provides essential strength and stability, allowing the hand to grasp and hold firmly, the Apostle offers foundational strength and authority to the ministry. This role involves leadership, paving new ways for the church and empowering other leaders to carry out their calling.

2. The Prophet is like the index finger. The index finger is mainly used for pointing and guiding, just like the Prophet who shares God’s direction and guidance with the church. This role involves discernment and teaching, helping the congregation understand God's will and purpose for their lives.

3. The Evangelist can be compared to the middle finger. As the longest finger, it reaches out the farthest, symbolizing the Evangelist’s mission to spread the message of salvation. The Evangelist actively strives to share the gospel with those outside the church, bridging the gap between believers and non-believers.

4. The pastor is symbolized by the ring finger. Often linked to commitment and covenant through the wedding band, the ring finger represents the pastor's lifelong dedication to the church community. This role includes nurturing, caring for, and guiding the congregation, building strong relationships, and offering spiritual guidance.
