Summary: Exposition of Psalm 8

Verse 1 | LORD, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with your majesty.

• NET: how magnificent is your reputation…

• LORD … YHWH…Personal Name…Covenantal Relationship) ** Jehovah **

• Lord … Adonai … King of the Universe…Authoritative Relationship.

Verse 2 | From the mouths of infants and nursing babies, you have established a stronghold on account of your adversaries in order to silence the enemy and the avenger.

Verse 3 | When I observe your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you set in place:

• God is indescribably great!

• The sun and moon are perfectly positioned for us to live

o The Sun – any closer and we would burn up and if it were any further away, we would freeze to death.

o The moon – if you move it any closer or further away, that would have impact on our gravity.

Verse 4 – 5 | What is a human being that you remember him, a son of man that you look after him? You made him little less than God and crowned him with glory and honor.

• What do you think about yourself?

• In contrasting God’s work in creation, it seems that mankind would be insignificant to him.

• Relatively speaking, the planet earth is a speck of dust in the universe. If this is so, what is a single man perched upon this planet? Yet God is interested in every individual! He has a personal, intimate concern for every human being. (Believers Bible Commentary)

• The term, Elohim, is used of either God and or the angelic beings: Thus, God put forth great effort in creating us and made us with just a little less than what he has.

• We have glory and honor because we are made in his image.

• This is something that in all of creation, nothing else has; only mankind.

Vese 6 – 8 | You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet all the sheep and oxen, as well as the animals in the wild, the birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea that pass through the currents of the seas.

• What is the image of God mean?

o A key aspect of our image bearer is that we have dominion (authority) over the earth, and we were called to care for the earth.

o Gardeners vs. Priests.

Verse 9 | LORD, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!

• David returns to the name of God because this is how prayer should start: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
