Proverbs 13
13:1 – A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke:
i. Parents are instructed to teach the Word of God to their children (Deuteronomy 6)
13:2 – A man shall eat well by the fruit of his mouth but the soul of the unfaithful feeds on violence:
i. Good speech brings blessings including prosperity.
13:3 – He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction:
i. Wise and good words can preserve life. Speaking too much often leads to sin, which leads to trouble, which leads to destruction, which leads to
13:4 – The soul of a lazy man desires and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich:
i. Lazy people have feelings too. They have desires for many things but they don’t apply themselves to make their desires reality.
13:5 – A righteous man hates lying But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame:
i. The righteous hate lying because it is the same hate God has towards the lie. It is a false reality that God has not created.
13:6 – Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but the wickedness overthrows the sinner.
i. Right living means that you are free and it protects/guards you.
ii. Our beliefs give birth to our works; our works determine our destiny.
