HIS NAME IS WONDERFUL
ISAIAH 9:6 – FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN, UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN, AND THE GOVERNMENT SHALL BE UPON HIS SHOULDERS: AND HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL, COUNSELOR, THE MIGHTY GOD,
THE EVERLASTING FATHER, THE PRINCE OF PEACE.
On July 21, 1969 President Nixon said that the greatest event in human history was when man set his foot on the moon - but the greatest event in human history was when God stepped foot on earth and became a man. That is the greatest event that ever happened, we call that the Incarnation – that Almighty God stepped out of heaven came out of the ivory palaces and into this world of woe and put his feet upon this earth.
I agree that it was great to put a man on the moon but what good is it to be able to put man on the moon and not have God in our hearts. What good is it to know ASTRONOMY The study of stars and not know Jesus the bright and morning star – What good is it to know BOTANY the study of flowers and not to know Jesus, Heavens sweetest rose the Rose of Sharon – What good is it to know HISTORY and not know Jesus and HIS STORY, for in him we live and move and have our being – What good is it to know GEOLOGY the study of rocks and not know Jesus the rock of ages.
The greatest event was not man going to the moon but God coming to earth in the form of a baby and so today our message is entitled HIS NAME IS WONDERFUL!
1. HE WAS WONDERFUL IN HIS BIRTH (Matthew 1: 18-23)
Jesus was conceived of the Holy Ghost – born of a virgin - in Bethlehem of Judea - And You shall find the Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger! WHAT A WONDERFUL BIRTH!
2. HE WAS WONDERFUL IN HIS LIFE - Jesus never committed a single sin. I Peter 2:22 – Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Hebrews 4:15 – He was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. There have been some good men in this world but only one PERFECT MAN! Pilate said, Having examined him closely, I FIND NO FAULT IN HIM
HE PERFORMED MANY MIRACLES: OVER NATURE – Stilled the storm; Fed 5,000 with two loaves of bread and two fishes; Walked on water; Put tax money in fishes mouth (Mt. 17:24); Caught fish until the nets break and the ships sank; Turned water into wine. OVER DISEASES – He healed the blind, the deaf, the cripple, the leper, the paralytic, Withered hands, Blood Issues, Healed the Epileptic boy, A bent woman, Cooled fever brows. OVER DEMONS - OVER DEATH – Jarius daughter, Widow’s son of nain and Lazarus. Jn. 7:46 – Never a man spoke like this man! Mt. 8:27 – What manner of man is this that even the winds and sea obey Him? WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE!
3. HE WAS WONDERFUL IN HIS DEATH - He died as no man has ever died. Others have died a sacrificial death, others have died for some great cause – BUT NO ONE HAS DIED FOR THE SINS OF THE WORLD!
THE WONDER OF HIS DEATH – THEY DID NOT TAKE HIS LIFE, HE GAVE IT.
John 10:18 – No man takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself, I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. HE WAS NOT FORCED TO DIED THEY LED HIM AWAY – HE DID NOT FIGHT – HE DID NOT COMPLAIN!
He could have called ten thousand angels – but instead He died for you and I – He took our sins on the Cross – Our punishment – Our Hell – Our Thirst – So we would never have to taste death or feel the terrible punishment of hell.
BUT WAIT THE STORY IS NOT OVER:
4. HE WAS WONDERFUL IN HIS RESURRECTION
Yes, they crucified Jesus and buried Him – BUT PRAISE GOD ON THE THIRD DAY, HE AROSE! HE GOT UP AND IS ALIVE FOR EVER MORE! “AND IS COMING AGAIN!”
Yes, Born of a virgin – Lived a sinless perfect life – Died on the cross to save us from our sins and Arose the third day – and coming again! (ONLY JESUS)
HIS NAME IS WONDERFUL!
