Intro: parents go to B-ham to Gaither homecoming. My first thought was, they are going to have to put up with all the crazy stuff from Mark Lowery. I thought, he’s a nut, he just is over the top, he is off the wall. So a while later I am riding up the road and a new Christmas song is released, “Mary Did You Know,” and it is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written. At the end of the song they say, song written by Mark Lowery.
You have got to be kidding, Mark Lowery wrote Mary Did You Know. I say, anyone who can write that song must hear from God because Mark had a true revelation to put down those words. It is such a great song, I thought it might make a great sermon. So today, my title is:
Mary Did You Know
1. Your Baby Boy would one day walk on water–one of the first classes in Bible College is Theology one, the study of God. You learn that God is omnipotent. Here we see omnipotence in full view when Jesus walks on water. Jesus is the Son of God, not just Mary’s little lamb. He is all powerful, He never met a problem he couldn’t solve, never met a mountain he couldn’t move and never met a devil he could not whip.
2. Your Baby boy will save your sons and daughters–one of the first things you learn, (not in Bible college) but in a Christian home or Sunday school, is that Jesus is the Saviour of the world. There is no other name by which we must be saved, his name shall be called Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
3. Your Baby boy has come to make you new–2 Corinthians 5:17–old things are passed away, behold all things become new. This is the story of transformation. Jesus not only saves your soul, but gives you a brand new life. He removes your sin as far as the east is from the west, He washes you white as snow, you are a new creation, a brand new man.
4. Baby you deliver, will one day deliver you–the message of deliverance may be foreign to some, but Jesus comes as the deliverer. He comes to set us free from sin, set us free from the flesh life to walk in the new life. Also, he came to deliver Israel. A nation that was servants to Rome, would become the nation of the king.
5. Heal the blind man–Jesus was not only Savior, but prophet, priest and King. In his many miracles he displayed his prophetic calling, but also his great compassion for the hurting shows that He was love, for God is love.
6. Calm a storm with his hand–just like his walking on water, we have another story of his power over nature. But the news goes beyond just calming the stormy sea, he calms the stormy soul. He calms the life that is confused, he calms the troubled heart, He wipes away the tears. If you have a storm, he can calm it, if you have a need he can meet it, he still gives a peace that passes understanding.
7. walked where angels trod–the pre-existent Christ is a deep theological study. But one thing is very simple, before Abraham, before Moses, before Adam, I am. He left the splendor of heaven, to walk where we walk. So he might be a high priest that could be touched with the feeling of our infirmities. When we say, no one knows, he comes and says, I do.
8. You kiss the face of God–three very important names are used for Jesus, one is Son of David–His royal lineage, Son of Man–that he was flesh, born of a woman. Son of God–Deity. Mary, your little baby boy is God. You gave birth to him, but he gave birth to the entire human race. Peter by the Spirit declared while others said he was just a great teacher, prophet or even John the Baptist back from the dead. That Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God.
9. The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again,
the lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb.
As already mentioned we have Jesus the prophet doing many miracles. Jesus even said, if you don’t believe in me, believe me for the works that I do. But this last part, praises to the lamb gives us another part of the salvation story. John the Baptist declared Jesus to be the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. The covenant people would understand the concept of the lamb saving them, and the scapegoat taking their sins away into the desert. We praise Jesus as the Lamb of God, because in heaven he offered his blood as sacrificial and God accepted it, and the seals to the book of life were opened, and everyone who’s name appears in the Lamb’s book of life is saved.
10. Lord of all creation–In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Jesus being the Word of God that dwells among us, and we behold it’s glory is a great study. When God said, logos, it was so. All of creation was the spoken Word of God. Mary did you know, in him we live and move and have our being. In him, by him and through him do all things consist. Here is Trinity teaching–God spoke, the Word created, the Spirit moved upon.
11. Will one day rule the nations–here is another great study on Mary’s baby boy. After the battle of Armageddon, Jesus will set up his thousand year rule from Jerusalem. We will reign with him, and it will be a time of perfect peace. The lion will lay down with the lamb.
12. Heaven’s perfect lamb–ditto point 9
13. Is the Great I Am–God revealed Himself to Moses as the I Am. Jesus comes to us as the Great I Am. I am the way, the truth and the life. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I am he which is, and which was, and which is to come the almighty. I am the stone that the builder rejected that has become the chief cornerstone.
Close: now I am sure that Mary didn’t know all of this back at the manger. And she might not of fully understood it all in her entire life. But we will all understand it in the sweet bye and bye.
We will all understand it when Jesus is the light of the city. When Jesus wipes away all tears. When every knee bows, and every tongue confesses, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Thank you Mark, you have given this world a song that really is a Christmas song.
*if this sermon touched your heart, then let Jesus come into your heart and save you today.
