Needing a Hero
1Sam 17:1
1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
5 And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Crocodile Hunter ILLUS. ( one thing to fight with something another to kill it)
In the news the other day it was reported that the world famous Australian Crocodile Hunter had been killed by a sting ray, really by accident.
I loved to watch the Croc Hunter on the animal planet and other stations, it was amazing to watch him work with the snakes, crocs, and other deadly animals. He knew just how far he could get to the venomous snakes without being bit, well that is often anyway. He knew just how to handle danger, and because of this he was known as a hero and a celebrity. Amazing isn’t it that some one so skilled and knowledgeable could be killed by a accident. They said that it was very rare for a sting ray to behave the way it did, you see for once the animal did the unexpected and a hero died.
Many times as people we play and tempt sin as if to say I have beat this so many times that I know how close I can get. I know my limit says the drunk, until he crashes into another car or person harming himself and others. We think sometimes that we have what it takes to defeat or tame sin, but in the end sin always wins.
The only hero that has ever defeated sin was Jesus Christ. The truth is many fight with sin (addictions) until the day they die, but it is one thing to struggle and fight with sin and another to kill it. Only Jesus Christ can do that.
Eph. 6:12
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

My Short lived Hero Career Illustrate. Afraid of Darkness
I grew up in a little town, and there was not always enough excitement near by, so sometimes I would have to find it. One night I decided that our town needed a superhero, and there was no one better qualified for the job as me.
I gathered together all my super hero garb, and gear. I put on my mask, of course you know that a super hero must wear a mask. If my identity were to be revealed my enemies might use that to their advantage and my defeat. At the age of 13 I snuck quietly into my parents room( the poor darlings had know idea of the danger that lurks outside)only to pat them and tuck them in before I went out into the danger and darkness.
I felt like the house was secure. I walked to the window and opened it, only to feel the cold air brush my face as if to say hello, I heard a dog howl and I noticed the lights were a lot more dimmer that what I had expected.
You know I was trained in Martial Arts, I had all kinds of super hero gear, I even had the outfit, but it was as I stood at that window that I realized I WAS AFRAID OF THE DARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe to day you think you are the hero to your situation and you don’t need God, but sooner or later friend you are going to face the darkest kind of darkness and you will discover you are AFRAID OF THE DARK !!!!!!!!!!!
When I walk in the darkness that this life brings, I only feel secure with Jesus as my hero.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
( We want to do good but goodness is overpowered by the sin that lies within us)

Eph 2:13-16
14 For he is our peace, :who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Rev 5:2
2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book: and to loose the seven seals thereof.
6 And I beheld, and lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand :of him that sat upon the throne.
8 And when he had taken the book the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of saints.
9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.
