Intro: Jesus spoke often in parables. Parables picture
for us important truths. In this parable, two main
characters are shown: The Rich Man, who was unsaved
(as evidenced by his lack of compassion on Lazarus in
their earthly days and by where he finds himself in
the afterlife), and Lazrarus, a poor man, TOTALLY
DEPENDENT upon God for his provision on earth...and
a saved man, (as evidenced by where he is found in
the afterlife). BOTH MEN DIED...LAZARUS WAS CARRIED
BY THE ANGELS INTO ABRAHAM’S BOSOM, THE RICH MAN DIED
AND WAS BURIED...."AND IN HELL HE LIFTED UP HIS EYES"
FROM THIS PARABLE, LET US EXAMINE THREE TRUTHS
ABOUT HELL:
I. THE MISERY of Hell
a. Looking up and seeing where he could’ve been.
b. Being alone..no companions recorded here.
c. Being in TORMENT
d. Being in AGONY
e. Constantly burning w/no relief in sight
f. Realizing this is PERMANENT no rescue, no
relief, no rest...FOREVER!!!
II. THE MISSIONARY in Hell
a. Suddenly the Rich man becomes a believer in
the reality of Hell...(albeit too late)
b. He begins to BEG (NOW WHO’S BEGGING??) FATHER
ABRAHAM to SEND LAZRUS TO HIS FATHER’S HOUSE
TO WARN THEM.
c. "I HAVE FIVE BROTHERS" (concerned about his
family now...again..too late!)
d. "they will believe if someone comes from the
dead!!" (Yet JESUS ROSE AGAIN...AND MANY
STILL FAIL TO BELIEVE OR RECEIVE HIM)
III. THE MESSAGE from Hell
a. It is an ACTUAL place...not a figment of
someone’s imagination.
b. It is an AWFUL place...worse than words
can describe...worse than we can imagine!
c. It is an AVOIDABLE place...no one has to
go there...WE AVOID HELL BY
1. REALIZING we’re sinners and can’t save
ourselves.
2. REPENTING of our sin
3. RECEIVING JESUS CHRIST as our personal
Savior.
4. RESOLVING TO WALK WITH HIM DAILY IN
THIS LIFE
John 14:6, Acts 4:12, John 3:16, I John 1:9
