The Lord,s Supper
I will read the Scriptures as we go through the message.
Introduction
In this message, I want us to look at 3 points
1- The Passover Meal.
2- The Lord’s Supper.
3- The Feet Washing.
I- The Passover Meal.
1- Matthew 26:17-20
17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. 20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
2- The Passover Meal was to remind the Jews of what God did for them in
Egypt.
A- The Passover Lamb.
B- The death Angel.
II- The Lord’s Supper.
1- Matthew 26:26-29
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new
with you in my Father’s kingdom
. 2- Jesus introduces the Lord’s Supper during the Passover Meal.
"As they were eating" V26a
3- The broken bread reminds us of Jesus’s broken body.
Matthew 26:26 (KJV)
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
4- The cup reminds us of Jesus’s shed blood of the New Covenant..
Matthew 26:27-28 (KJV)
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
5- Thoughts:
A- As the Jews observe the Passover once a year, we (The Church)should observe the Lord’s Supper at least once a year.
1 Corinthians 11:26 (KJV)
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
III-The Feet Washing.
John 13:4-5: John 13:12-17 (KJV)
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
1- The Foot Washing part teaches humility.
2- Our Lord and Master humbled Himself.
A- Not only to wash feet.
B- But also to the cross.
3- What will keep Disciples from washing one another feet? PRIDE
4- It not only takes humility to wash feet, it takes humility to let
someone else wash your feet.
