Summary: Why should we number our days?

Teach us to number our days

Psa 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Shouldn’t we just forget the past and move forward?!

Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

Number them! Why?

1. to remember how short they are

Psa 90:5-6 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

Psa 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years

Job 20:5-7 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

Ecc 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Ecc 12:8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

Psa 90:10 … for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Will you continue to count forever?

Psa 4:2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing?

Number your days…you will understand that you have already consumed most of them.

2. to learn about their evilness

Psa 90:7-9 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

Eph 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Psa 90:15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.

Many of what we face today is the result of yesterday.

3. to be ready to give an account on them

Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Amo 4:12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.

Number your days because you will give an account on every one of them.

Luk 16:2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.

Ecc 9:12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Number your days before it’s too late.

1Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Number your days and if you find in them evil, be wise and do ask for mercy.

Psa 90:14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
