A WOMAN NAMED JADIS

Show images of the White Witch here.

Her name is Jadis. She was made from a Jinn (an evil spirit) and a Giant. She destroyed her previous world Charn and lay in deep sleep until the young professor Kirke woke her up with a magical bell in the Magician’s Nephew. From the very moment of Narnia’s creation by Aslan the Lion she entered that realm and went into hiding for close to a thousand years. A hundred years before the four Pevensie children enter Narnia she descends from the cold regions of the North to blight the land of Narnia with a hundred year winter. For over 100 years she has held sway over all the land of Narnia. Her realm of power is as cold as her heart. This is our introduction to the Cold Queen of Narnia.

In the middle of the sledge, sat a very different person – a great lady, taller than any woman that Edmund had ever seen. She also was covered in white fur up to her throat and held a long straight golden wand in her right hand and wore a golden crown on her head. Her face was white – not merely pale,…except for her very read mouth. It was a beautiful face in other respects, but proud and cold and stern. LWW page 123

“Before the new, clean world I gave you is seven hours old, a force of evil has already entered it; waked and brought hither by this son of Adam” Aslan referring to young Digory bringing Jadis into the newly created world of Narnia. MN page 80

“…in order to rescue and deliver us from this present wicked age and world order” Galatians 1:4 AMP

We know …. that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 1 John 5:19 NIV

SHE HAS THE DISPOSITION OF THE DEVIL

1. SHE IS A REBEL – SHE WILL SUBMIT TO NO RULE OR LAW

“You must learn, child, that what would be wrong for you or for any of the common people is not wrong in a great Queen such as I.” Then she moves to the Royal We by saying, “We must be freed from all rules. Ours is a high and lonely destiny.” Jadis to young Digory. MN page 42

“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan” 2 Thessalonians 2:9 NIV

2. SHE IS A DECEIVER – AN EVIL ENCHANTRESS

“I will put my mantle around you and we will talk” Jadis to Edmund LWW page 124

“[The Devil] when he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 NLT

“Satan, the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe, so they are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News that is shining upon them….” 2 Corinthians 4:4 NLT

3. SHE IS A COUNTERFEIT QUEEN – SHE GAINED HER THRONE BY TREACHERY

“It is she who has got all Narnia under her thumb. It’s she who makes it always winter” Mr Tumnus, the fawn, to Lucy in LWW page 118

“The White Witch?” said Edmund; “ who’s she?” “She is a perfectly terrible person,” said Lucy. “She calls herself the Queen of Narnia though she has no right to be queen at all “ LWW page 128

“She isn’t a real queen at all, she’s a horrible witch, the White Witch. … She has made an enchantment over the whole country so that it is always winter here and never Christmas.” Lucy to Peter when enquiring about the Queen Jadis. LWW page 136.

“… the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 NIV

“Then the devil took Him up to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the habitable world in a moment of time 6 And he said to Him, Satan to Jesus “To You I will give all this power and authority and their glory ….., for it has been turned over to me, and I give it to whomever I will.” Luke 4:5-6 AMP

4. SHE IS A USER – THOSE IN HER GRASP MEAN NOTHING TO HER UNLESS THEY CAN PROMOTE HER OWN ADVANCEMENT AND POWER.

“I expect most witches are like that. They are not interested in things or people unless they can use them; they are terribly practical.” Magician’s Nephew, page 47

5. SHE IS A DESTROYER OF LIFE – HER PREVIOUS REIGN IN THE WORLD OF CHARN WAS ONE IN WHICH SHE DESTROYED ALL LIVING EXCEPT HERSELF BY USE OF THE DEPLORABLE WORD.

After destroying every living thing in the Realm of Charn she dismisses her actions, “Don’t you understand? They were all my people. What else were they there for but to do my will.” MN page 42

“’I’ said the Queen. ‘I, Jadis the last Queen, but the Queen of the World.’ … spoke the Deplorable Word. [a word when spoken would destroy all living things except the one who spoke it.] A moment later I was the only living thing beneath the sun.” in The Magician’s Nephew explaining how she was the only one living in the world of Charn after her sister would not give her the throne she coveted. MN Page 41

You are just like the Witch. All you think of is killing things.” Polly to Uncle Andrew, MN page 68

“[The Devil] was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth”. John 8:44 NLT

The destroyers of the earth." Revelation 11:18 ESV

They had a king over them, the Angel of the Abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, in Greek, Apollyon — "Destroyer." Rev. 9:11, MSG

Edmund did not like this arrangement at all but he dared not disobey” page 124

A BOY NAMED JINX

1. THE PULL OF SIN

“The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust.” James 1:14 MSG

[This deception of ] evil sleight of hand … plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them. 11 And since they’re so obsessed with evil, God rubs their noses in it — gives them what they want. 12 Since they refuse to trust truth, they’re banished to their chosen world of lies and illusions. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 MSG

[The Antichrist] will use every kind of evil to trick those who are lost. They will die, because they refused to love the truth. (If they loved the truth, they would be saved.) 2 Thessalonians 2:10 NCV

Edmund was looking very hard at the empty box and wishing that she would ask him whether he would like some more…this was enchanted Turkish Delight and that anyone who had once tasted it would want more and more of it, and would even, if they were allowed, go on eating it till they killed themselves. LWW page 125-126

HE HAS THE CHARACTER OF A FOOL

• IRRITABLE: Edmund was bad tempered when he was tired. Pg 111; When Susan asked him to go to bed because he was tired Edmund snapped Trying to talk like Mother. And who are you to say when I’m to go to bed? Go to bed yourself.” Pg 111, 112

• COMPLAINING: Of course it would be raining – Edmund; Do stop grumbling, Ed –Susan page 112

Up to that moment Edmund had been feeling sick, and sulky, and annoyed with Lucy for being right, Page 129

• SPITEFUL: Edmund making fun of Lucy’s after she had told them she had been gone for hours when to them it had only been minutes in their time: Batty, said Edmund taping his head. Quite batty. Page 120

Edmund could be spiteful and on this occasion he was spiteful. He sneered and jeered at Lucy and kept on asking her if she’d found any other new countries in other cupboards all over the house. Page 121

Peter makes this comment about Edmund spitefulness: You didn’t think anything at all, its just spite. You’ve always liked being beastly to anyone smaller than yourself; we’ve seen that at school before now.

And now we come to one of the nastiest things in this story. … he decided to do the meanest and most spiteful thing he could think of. He decided to let Lucy down … he was becoming a nastier person every minute, thought he had scored a great success.. Page 129

• FOOLISH: He jumped in and shut the door, forgetting what a very foolish thing this is to do. – showing his inattention to safety and rules, as well as his compulsiveness. Page 122

• VINDICTIVE: When stung by being found out to be a deceiver of the reality of Lucy’s story about Narnia Edmund spoke to himself saying I’ll pay you all out for this, you pack of stuck-up, self-satisfied prigs. – page 135.

• PROUD: As for what the Witch would do with the others, he didn’t want her to be particularly nice to them – certainly not to put them on the same level as himself page 151

Edmund noticed something else… Edmund could see two small hills … And he thought about Turkish Delight and about being a King (“And I wonder how Peter will like that?” he asked himself) and horrible ideas came into his head” page 142

• SUSPICIOUS: Edmund kept thinking that the others were taking no notice of him and trying to give him the cold shoulder. They weren’t but he imagined it. Page 151

• RESISTANT TO GOODNESS: When Edmund first heard of Aslan he felt a sensation of mysterious horror. Page 141; The mention of Aslan gave him a mysterious and horrible feeling just as it gave the others a mysterious and lovely feeling – page 151

2. THE PLEASURE OF SIN

“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.” Genesis 3:6 NIV

“[Moses] chose to share ill-treatment with God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.” Hebrews 11:24 LB

“But easy street is a dead-end street. Those who live there make their bellies their gods … all they can think of is their appetites.” Philippians 3:19 MSG

Instantly there appeared a round box, tied with green silk ribbon, which, when opened, turned out to contain several pounds of the best Turkish Delight. Each piece was sweet and light to the very centre and Edmund had never tasted anything more delicious. He was quite warm now, and very comfortable. LWW page 125

When Lucy found out that Mr. Tumnus was in real trouble Edmund flippantly said, A lot we could do when we haven’t even got anything to eat!” page 137

When he was reasoning with Peter about the trustworthiness of the Robin leading them through the woods and them loosing their way back home he could only say And no chance of dinner either. Page 138

There is nothing that spoils the taste of good ordinary food half as much as the memory of bad magic food. – page 151

3. THE PUPPET OF SIN

“It wasn’t so long ago that we ourselves were stupid and stubborn, dupes of sin, ordered every which way by our glands, going around with a chip on our shoulder, hated and hating back. Titus 3:3 MSG

Edmund was already more than half on the side of the Witch – page 128

After Edmund had been warned about the danger of the white witch and even feeling uncomfortable about the news it says, But he still wanted to taste that Turkish Delight again more than he wanted anything else.” Page 128

4. THE PARADOX OF SIN

“’Stolen water is sweeter. Stolen bread tastes better.’ 18 Her victims do not know that the people die who go to her house, that those who have already entered are now deep in the world of the dead.” Proverbs 9:17-18 TEV

“Evil tastes so good to him that he keeps some in his mouth to enjoy its flavor. 14 But in his stomach the food turns bitter, as bitter as any poison could be. …16 What the evil man swallows is like poison; it kills him like the bite of a deadly snake.” Job 20:12-16 TEV

He thought only of trying to shovel down as much Turkish Delight as he could, and the more he ate the more he wanted to eat.” LWW page 125

There are whole rooms of Turkish Delight, and what’s more … I want a nice boy whom I could bring up as a Prince and who would be King of Narnia when I am gone.” Page 127

A CHILD NAMED JESUS

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. Matthew 2:1-3 NIV
