REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE
Luke 17:32
32 Remember Lot’s wife.
Gen 19:17-26
17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
1. Escape for thy life:
Escaping the destruction of sin
Acts 2:40
Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
1 Cor 6:18
18 Flee fornication.
Eph 5:6
6 Let no man deceive you
1 Cor 10:14
flee from idolatry.
2 Tim 2:22
22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Escape for thy life!
James 1:15
15 sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
1 Cor 15:56
56 The sting of death is (caused by) sin;
2. Look not behind thee:
Luke 9:62
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Hind sight is not always twenty-twenty. When we are tempted to look back at the old life we only see the good times that we had and not the sorrow that sin brought to our lives.
We remember the taste, smell, sight, sound, and the feel of sin, but we forget that it almost destroyed our marriages, families, and health. We lost good jobs, sin destroyed relationships, finances and good credit.
Friends, living the kind of life that we were living back there had us on the road to hell. You don’t want to look back.
3. Neither stay thou:
There is tremendous danger in staying in one place too long.
1 Peter 2:2
(Learn and apply) the word, that ye may grow.
Phil 3:14-15
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded:
1 Cor 15:58
be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
1 Thess 4:1
ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
James 5:16
Avail through prayer.
2 Tim 2:15
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Babies that do not grow, die. Christians that do not grow, die.
Seven day without prayer or Bible study makes one weak.
4. Escape to the mountain (a safe place and a place of advantage)
1 Thess 5:9
9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 Peter 3:9
not willing that any should perish,
Ezek 18:32
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
1 Cor 10:13
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Ps 107:28-30
28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
Luke 17:32
[Remember Lot’s wife] See Gen 19:26. "She" looked back-she delayed-perhaps she "desired" to take something with her, and God made her a monument of his displeasure. Jesus directed his disciples, when they saw the calamities coming upon the Jews, to flee to the mountains, Matt 24:16. He here charges them to be in haste-not to look back-not to delay-but to escape quickly, and to remember that by delaying the wife of Lot lost her life.
(from Barnes’ Notes)
Gal 6:9
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
