Summary: This show a great Picture of God’s Mercy

The Healing at the Pool

John 5:1-15

Miracles #13

As we continue in the study of the Miracles of Jesus we are now at one that shows a great picture of Mercy. There is a difference between Mercy and Grace. Grace is getting something we do not deserve Salvation comes from Grace. Mercy is not getting the Punishment we do deserve. The wages of sin is death. Mercy is not getting that. If God did not show mercy we could never experience His grace.

I. The Place: The House of Mercy 5:1-2

II. The Picture of Sin: 5:3-4

A. Blind: Can’t see the truth of the Word of God.

B. Lame: Can’t walk in the ways of God.

C. Paralyzed: Helpless unable to do anything to save

ourselves.

NOTE: Explanation of the pool. When the water moved the first person in the water was healed. The ones that needed healing the most were the ones that could not get in to be healed. Harry Ironside wrote “Here was the best that the Law could do. The law had help for the one who needed it the least. The strong could get into the water first. But the worse he was, the more helpless and the more sinful, the more wretched his condition, the less likely he was to avail himself of the privileges that the law could offer.”

III. The Provision of Mercy 5:5-9

A. The Sinner’s Need: He had been sick for thirty-eight years.

NOTE: This man was not seeking Jesus, we find out in later he did not even know the name of the man that healed him. Jesus came seeking him.

Romans 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God draws us to salvation. If we are looking for God that means He is drawing us to Him

A little boy was asked, “Son, have you found Jesus?” And he, looking up, said, “Why, sir, I didn’t know He was lost; but I was, and He found me.”

B. The Savior’s Question: Do you want to be made well?

C. The Standard Reply: There is no one to help me. I do not know the way

NOTE: There is no one but Jesus how can give mercy. He is the one that can provide the cure for sin.

D. The Salvation that is given:

NOTE: it was immediate and complete

IV. The Problem of the Law. 5:10-13

NOTE: The Law and Mercy are at odds with each other.

A. Two laws that were broken:

1. The law that one could not heal on the Sabbath.

NOTE: It was okay to keep a person from getting any worse but if they got better then it was breaking the law.

2. The law of not carrying a load on the Sabbath. His bed was considered a load.

NOTE: Legalism in churches destroys mercy.

V. The Problem of Sin: 5:14-15

NOTE: This is one of places in the bible that tells us that his sickness was a result of sin.
