THREE REASONS WHY WE SHOULD NOT WORRY
Luke 12:22-31
INTRODUCTION
Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry taught worrying specifically. In the parable of the rich man before our text, Jesus sensitively shown or pictured the destination of this rich man who lay up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God. Following our text in verse 22, Jesus pinned this parable by saying, “Therefore do not worry.”
It is interesting to note here that it is a command instructed to His disciples, a strong and direct command so that if you are a follower also of Jesus Christ, you must follow this instructions. From our text, we can know three reasons why we should not worry.
BODY
1. The first reason why we should not worry is found in verse 22-24. In worrying, it will give us wrong perspective in life. As specifically told by Jesus in verse 22-24, the source of our worries are the things of our life here on earth, What we will eat; or about the body , what we will put on. If we keep on worrying about these things, it will give us wrong perspective in life because God did not create us for these things. We were created to glorify God (Isaiah 47:7).
One interesting here to consider according to Jesus are the ravens. According to researchers who studied the life of these birds, they have only one mate until their death and have only one nest to lay their eggs in their entire life. Their lifespan and lifestyle are like human beings because these birds live up to seventy years old and God provided their needs. It is specifically started in our text that we are much more important than these birds to God. the very impacting word in the Scripture that best define this love is in John 3:16-“For God so love the world that He gave His only Begotten Son that whosoever believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” So why worry, God cares for you so much.
2. The second reason why we should not worry is found in verse 25. In worrying, it does not extend our life. I like the thought of a French soldier during World War I that I read from a book.
“Of two things, one is certain. Either you are at front, or you are behind the lines. If you are at front, of two things one is certain. Either you are exposed to danger, or you are in safe place. If you are exposed to danger, of two things one is certain. Either you are wounded, or you are not wounded. If you are wounded, of two things one is certain. Either you recover, or you die. If you recover, there is no need to worry. If you die, you cannot worry. SO WHY WORRY?"
One humorous phrase that I read states, “Elephants live longer than people, maybe because they never worry about trying to lose weight.”
Worrying affect us so much that even sometimes, according to scientist, this could cause impairment of judgment and faulty perception of physical phenomenon to their astronauts send to space. For us who are students there is also an effect of this worry in our activities. According to a book that I have read, a survey of about 5,000 students in 21 different colleges confirms that worriers get the lowest grades.
Therefore, do not worry. Worrying affects our daily potential and most of all does not extend our life.
3. The third reason why we should not worry is in worrying, it makes us an unbeliever. In verse 29-30, “do not set your heart on what you eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things.” According to our text, worrying about what we eat or drink makes us no difference from the unbelievers because this is the heart of their living, nothing else. The reason for them to live is to eat and drink only. It is like the parable of the rich man before our text, which Jesus uses as a bridge to bring His disciples in this teaching about worrying. Therefore, as a true follower of Jesus Christ, do not follow or do what the unbelievers do. Instead, follow the instruction of your master, Lord Jesus Christ, DO NOT WORRY.
CONCLUSION
In verse 31, Jesus told His disciples, “But seek his kingdom, and these things will be added unto you.” If we keep on seeking the will of God and seeking His righteousness, which is His kingdom, and all this things that we are worrying about will all come. Remember He is in control and He was the one who created us.
Again worrying gives us wrong perspective in life, worrying does not add our life, and worrying makes us an unbeliever. THEREFORE, DO NOT WORRY.
