Introduction
This is undoubtedly the most famous and oft-quoted of the Psalms. But why? Perhaps it is because of the comfort the Shepherd brings. But also, we see the promises of the Shepherd that we enjoy not only in this life, but in the eternity to come.
This is a psalm of the Great Shepherd and His care and protection of His flock.
I. PROMISE OF REST (23:1-2)
The opening verses give us a picture of perfect rest, of being able to lay aside all of our troubles.
Jesus promised to give us rest, Matthew 11:28.
1. He is speaking primarily of our spiritual rest, being at peace with God, our sins forgiven.
2. This is a rest from all ills of this sinful life, released from oppressive burdens of sin, Hebrews 4:3.
This rest will bring spiritual peace to our lives, Romans 8:6.
II. PROMISE OF STRENGTH (23:3)
God will give us the spiritual strength we need to be successful in our life, Isaiah 40:29-31.
Jesus didn’t leave us to fight on our own; He has promised us strength, Ephesians 1:18-20.
We know without doubt the strength of God can overcome any scheme Satan brings against us, 1 Cor. 1:24-28.
III. PROMISE OF COMFORT (23:4-5)
What a beautiful promise – no matter where we are or what is confronting us, God will give us comfort, “The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek Him.” Ezra 8:22.
Put your trust in the Lord; let Him comfort your travels through this world, Proverbs 29:25.
We receive our comfort from many sources:
1. God, 2 Cor. 1:3-4.
2. Christ, Matthew 9:22.
3. Holy Spirit, Acts 9:31.
4. Scriptures, Romans 15:4.
5. Christians, 1 Thess. 4:18.
IV. PROMISE OF ETERNAL BLESSINGS (23:6)
This should be the goal of every person alive – to dwell in the house of the Lord.
Jesus said He was going to prepare a place for us, and one day is going to return. He promised! John 14:1-4.
We realize this eternal house is far better than anything we can even imagine now.
1. It is something to be desired, 2 Cor. 5:2.
2. We look forward to the Lord’s coming, 2 Peter 3:12.
3. It is “far better,” Phil. 1:23.
Conclusion
Today is the day of action; to take advantage of these beautiful promises.
