Jesus Paid It All
Matthew 27: 35-46
INTRODUCTION:
• Tonight we are going to continue reflecting upon the cross of Jesus Christ and His suffering in particular.
• It’s in the darkness of the suffering of Jesus that we understand the truth of God’s wonderful Grace!
ILLUSTRATION:
• I can remember not to long ago driving to NH and coming up to a toll booth. I took out my money but the person was waving me through? I did not know what was going on so I rolled down my window and the man said that the car in front of me had paid the toll for me! I was free to press on with my Journey because the toll had been paid!
• The same is true with Jesus Christ, he went before us and paid the toll so you and I could pass through and continue moving forward toward our destination, Home!
PROPISITION:
• Jesus really did pay it all, Not some, Not a partial payment plan, Jesus paid it all.
PREVIEW:
Tonight I want to share with you what it means that Jesus paid it all!!!

TRANSITION:
If you will open your bibles to Matthew 27:35- 46 we can begin…
I. Jesus Bore Our Shame (Matthew27:35-38)
EXPLAINATION:
Lets take a moment to look at the shame Jesus faced
• Vs. 35 - “When they had crucified him” - This verse starts in such a casual way you almost miss what has transpired.
o Crucifixion was the most shameful way a man could possibly be put to death.
o The one who was to be crucified was to carry the cross on a path as to be noticed by as many as possible
o Crucifixion was reserved for the worst criminals
• Vs. 35 - “They divided up his clothes by casting lots” – Jesus hung almost completely naked.
o Not only did Jesus have to hang nearly naked but He also had to do it in front of the people He loved most.
o Jesus hung naked in front of those whom He taught about His power.
• Vs. 37 - “Above his head they placed a written charge against him”
o This statement was a mocking one, to show the world Jesus was a fraud.
• Vs. 38 - “Two robbers were crucified with him”
o It was not enough that the prince of peace was crucified, that he was naked, that they placed a mocking sign over His head; they now placed Him between two criminals.
There is NO response from Christ in Matthews Gospel, NONE!
ILLUSTRATION:
I don’t know about you but when I see injustice being perpetrated it makes me angry! I want justice; I want to see the bad guy suffer. It is natural to want justice and it was the response of Christ on several different occasions (woman caught in adultery, Temple) yet here as the shame is perpetrated against Him He is silent?
APPLICATION:
• So why then did Jesus not respond, He did not respond because upon the cross He took our shame in order that we would not have to be ashamed any longer.
• Tonight are you ashamed? Ashamed of your sin, your walk with God or you lack of commitment?

II. Jesus Bore Our Disdain Matthew27:39-44
EXPLAINATION: Let’s take a moment to consider the disdain of the cross:
• Vs. 39 - Hurled Insults at him shaking their heads – (The common People)
o The beating was not enough, to crucify Christ not enough, they also had to show their disdain for Christ.
• Vs. 41 – Mocked Him – (The Religious Leaders)
o Not only was the flogging and crucifixion not enough but also the mocking of the common people was not enough, now the leadership had to get involved.
• Vs. 44 – The robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. (Convicted Criminals)
o Not only did common people and the religious leaders mock Jesus but now we see that even Convicted Criminals got in on the action.
Yet there is still no response from Christ
ILLUSTRATION:
• You may say I would never do that to Christ but let me ask you a question; do you do it to others? Do you think twice when you disdain others with which you disagree? Democrats, Republicans? Homosexuals, Pro-Choice you fill in the blank.
• You may disagree with them, you may oppose them but my question is do you disdain them?
APPLICATION:
• Jesus received the disdain of the people in order that we could be forgiven for our disdain TOWARDS OTHERS!
• Jesus received hatred in order that our hatred for each other could be forgiven.
JESUS PAID IT ALL
TRANSITION:
So we have seen the shame and disdain Jesus bore but lastly let’s look at how…
III. Jesus Bore Our Pain Matthew 27:46
EXPLAINATION:
• We hear all about the physical pain of the cross, but it was the spiritual pain that caused Jesus to cry out!
• In this passage we are forced to consider the unthinkable, Jesus being made sin for us. All the sins of the world dropped on the head of Christ!
• What we must understand about the cross is the spiritual pain it caused Christ.
o For the first time Jesus was separated from God
o For the first time Jesus experienced sin (all of them past, present and future at once)
• When we think about the nails we cringe because we can begin understand what that would be like but the spiritual pain we can not understand at all. Imagine all the sin of the world past present and future all dropped upon your head!
Now we finally hear Jesus Cry Out! It was in the Spiritual Pain of the Cross It was separation from the Father
ILLUSTRATION:
“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” CS Lewis
Tonight I want you to hear the shouting voice of Christ in the pain of the cross – “My God, My God Why Has Thou Forsaken Me?” I want you to hear it because in Christ’s pain we learn a great lesson!
APPLICATION:
• We learn that we can handle anything but separation from our God!
• We can get through everything when we are right with God but we can not survive separation from our God.
• Tonight are you separated from God? (Believers and Non-Believers)
o Can you hear His voice?
o Can you sense His presence?
o Can you feel His love?
o Do you cry when you are alone because your sin has found you out? If you do hear these (4) words!!!
JESUS PAID IT ALL…
CONCLUSION:
• Tonight where are you:
o Are you wearing a mask and telling everyone including God that everything is ok and yet inside you’re deeply ashamed?
o Are you certain that God’s forgiveness is good for everyone else but yourself?
o Is the Christian life becoming a burden rather than a love story between yourself and your God?
Restate Proposition:
• As we work our way toward Easter remember, Jesus paid it all! He did not pay a partial payment, a down payment Jesus paid it all.
• This means your acceptable to God! He loves you, even better He really likes you.
• When you understand that then you are able to move forward in your faith and travel a little closer to home each day, home to your Father.
Restate Main Points:
Jesus Bore our Shame – We no longer have to be ashamed
Jesus Bore our Disdain – We are forgiven of our unfaithfulness toward others
Jesus Bore our Pain – Our Sin no longer separates us from our God
