For 2005 Utilize the Twenty Ways That Jehovah is Used in the Scriptures (Exodus 6:2-10)
We often sing the song, "Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed. Finding as He promised, perfect peace and rest." However, do we really comprehend the full meaning of the name Jehovah?
Fact:The word "JEHOVAH" translated "LORD," is recorded in the King James Bible, 3,119 times.
Illustration: On his deathbed, British preacher Charles Simeon smiled brightly and asked the people gathered in his room, "What do you think especially gives me comfort at this time?"
When they all remained silent, he exclaimed, "The creation! I ask myself, ’Did Jehovah create the world or did I?’ He did! Now if He made the world and all the rolling spheres of the universe, He certainly can take care of me. Into Jesus’ hands I can safely commit my spirit!"
Hudson Taylor, founder of China Inland Mission, in the closing months of his life said to a friend, "I am so weak. I can’t read my Bible. I can’t even pray. I can only lie still in God’s arms like a little child and trust."
Both Simeon and Taylor knew that the almighty God who created the universe was holding them in His hands. Moses had the same assurance when he blessed the children of Israel before he died (Deut. 33). They could face the future with confidence because the God who had delivered them would also preserve them.
We certainly need not be fearful, then, as we enter a new year. God will never forsake His redeemed children. We can rejoice that our great Creator holds us in His hands. And that’s true for every child of God. --HGB

"God also said to Moses, ’I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as El-Shaddai [which means God Almighty], but by my name Jehovah [or Yahweh which means I AM] I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they lived as aliens. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.’" (Ex. 6:2-5)
God uses different names as descriptive terms of His character, not always as simple titles.(1,2) A good example of God’s different descriptive names occurs in Gen 6:5, 12-18. God is "Jehovah" in verse 5 and in verses 12-18, God is "Elohiym." Let us ask the Lord to show us what the name Jehovah reveals about God’s character.
At this point there were some parts of God’s character not seen by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They had not seen Jehovah lead them to the promised land - they had not seen the covenant fulfilled. The meaning of "Jehovah" is not only "I AM" but also, "he is" or "he will be." God is saying here that "he will be" the one to lead them to the fulfillment of His covenant.
More specifically, "Jehovah" is the name often used for the characteristic of God that is Just. Here, Jehovah will fulfill His promise and keep His covenant because He is Just. It’s nice to know that not only is God "The Almighty," the creator of the Universe, He is also "Jehovah," the one who hears us and remembers His covenant - not only His covenant to the Israelites but His covenant to us involving His son and our redemption! In fact, the "I am he" of John 18:5-9 may be a reference to God’s covenant fulfilling character "I AM." 15. Jehovah Izoz Hakaboth - The Lord Strong and Mighty (Psa 24:8)"Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle."
16. Jehovah Jireh - The Lord will provide (Gen 22:14) "So Abraham called that place the Lord will provide. And to this day it is said, ’On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided."
Illustration: One day Billy and Ruth Graham were driving through a long stretch of road construction. They had numerous slowdowns, detours, and stops along the way. Finally they reached the end of all that difficulty, and smooth pavement stretched out before them. This sign caught Ruth’s attention: "End of construction. Thanks for your patience." She commented that those words would be a fitting inscription on her tombstone someday.
As a matter of fact, those words fit all of us as believers, because in this life we are "under construction." When we accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, we begin the lifelong process of spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit works in us to remove our selfishness (Philippians 2:4), to renew our thinking (Romans 12:2), and to develop qualities in us that are more and more Christlike (Colossians 3:5-14). Paul described this process as a work of God. He said, "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6).
As we travel heavenward, let’s cooperate with God’s construction of our lives. When His work in us is complete, "we shall be like Him" (1 John 3:2), perfectly conformed to our Savior’s likeness. —VCG

23. Jehovah-Nissi: This is the symbolical name of an altar in the desert. It also means, the Alter is my banner.
The altar of Moses was named, JEHOVAH -NISSI, telling of Gods strength and vengeance, against the Hebrews enemy, Amalek.
24. Jehovah-Shalom - JDG 6:24 Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it JEHOVAH-SHALOM and unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Gideon named his Altar JEHOVAH-SHALOM, happiness, peace, and welfare, because a Prophet, him, and an Angel saved Gods people.
Israel did evil in the sight of God, and for seven years was given into the hands of the Midians, and the Amalekites to live in poverty.
PSA 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose "name" or action, is "JEHOVAH" the most high over all the earth
Conclusion: Jehovah is the Hebrew national name of God, and also, Self-Existent.
PSA 83:18 The Hebrew word meaning "Name," does not presume Gods surname to be "JEHOVAH," but speaks of His position, character, and actions.
Asaph used the word JEHOVAH "The Self-Existent," as a warning to the heathen that they cannot destroy the people of Israel.
JOS 2:24 Israels Pagan enemies faint, when hearing that the word "JEHOVAH" The Self-Existent, because it means any attack against Israel will come to naught.
When the dedicated folks going house to house, see people fall at their feet in a faint, at the mention of the "ACTION WORD, JEHOVAH" they are converted.
ISA 12:2 Behold, God the almighty is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid:
For the LORD most vehement, JEHOVAH the Self-Existent, is my strength and my song, He also is become my salvation.
Like a river glorious, is God’s perfect peace,
