I Am The Way
Context: John 14
Text: John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Philosophers, and scholars throughout the centuries have debated about who Jesus is and what He has to do with our everyday lives. Some have mocked him. Others have believed Him. Such was the case even when Jesus was walking on earth. In any case there comes a time in every person’s life when we must each face the question head on, “Who is Jesus?”
Over the next few Sundays, I would like to examine some of the “I Am” sayings of Christ where He introduces Himself and speaks to us about who He is.
Today we are looking at John 14:6.
I. I am the Way.
A. The narrow way.
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
B. The Holy Way
And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (Isaiah 35:8-10)
The travelers on this road:
1. Have a dependable sense of direction.
2. Have assurance of protection from ravenous beasts and ungodly people. This tells us that the devil who walks about as a roaring lion cannot devour us as long as we are on this highway. The only danger of being devoured is if a traveler chooses to leave God’s highway and walk another road. This also tells us that sinners are not on the highway to Heaven. God’s way is the only way to get to Heaven. Any other road leads to destruction. Only God’s people travel on God’s road to Heaven. Sinners are welcome to go through the strait gate, repent and walk on this highway, but they will not be able to hold onto their sins and walk this road.
3. Are compelled by a conviction of mission.
These travelers are here on purpose. They have purposed in their hearts that Heaven is their goal and will be worth every sacrifice and every trial just to reach that goal.
4. Will reach their destination triumphantly.
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (Isaiah 35:10)
C. The only way.
“No man cometh to the Father, but by me.” John 14:6b
1. Good works will not get you to Heaven
2. Religion will not get you to Heaven.
3. Jesus is the only way.
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)
Conclusion: Jesus says, “I Am the Way.” He is the only way. If you plan to get to Heaven you must go through Jesus Christ. He suffered for your sin. You must confess to Him that you are a sinner—that you have broken the moral law of God. You must repent of your sin and begin walking the Holy Highway of obedience to God. Then you must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He is your only hope of Salvation. Will you do this today?
