THE GREATEST NEED THE WORLD HAS TODAY IS FOR THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH TO SHOW THEM AND PROVE TO THEM THAT THERE REALLY IS SUCH A THING AS THE GENUINE, CHRIST-LIKE EXAMPLE OF AGAPE LOVE.
IF YOU JUST SIMPLY LOOK AT TODAY’S POPULAR CULTURE IN LITERATURE, MUSIC, ADVERTISING AND THE VISUAL ARTS, YOU WOULD QUICKLY COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT IT DOES NOT KNOW THE DEFINITION OF LOVE.
IF WE TOOK OUR LESSONS FROM THEM, WE WOULD THINK THAT LOVE IS NOTHING MORE THAN A “FEELING” OR SOMETHING YOU FALL INTO AND OUT OF. WITH THAT MIND-SET, ONE COULD EVEN GO AS FAR AS STARTING TO EQUATE LOVE WITH LUST.
AS CHRISTIANS, WE KNOW THAT IS NOT HOW LOVE IS DEFINED.
AS BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIANS, WE KNOW THAT TRUE AGAPE LOVE IS NOT A “FEELING,” BUT AN ACTION, AN UNCONDITIONAL COMMITMENT, AND A PROMISE THAT IS NEVER BROKEN.
IF CHURCHES WOULD ADOPT THE UNCONDITIONAL MEANING OF LOVE STATED BY PAUL IN 1 CORINTHIANS 13, I BELIEVE OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IN THE CHURCH TODAY WOULD BE A SEATING PROBLEM BECAUSE WE WOULD HAVE MORE PEOPLE THAN PEWS.
PAUL MADE AN INTERESTING CONTRAST IN EXPLAINING THE MEANING OF LOVE. HE NOT ONLY TELLS US WHAT LOVE IS TO BE, BUT ALSO WHAT IT IS NOT.
PAUL SAID THAT LOVE IS: PATIENT, KIND AND THAT IT ALWAYS TRUST, ALWAYS HOPES AND ALWAYS PERSEVERES. PAUL ALSO SAID WHAT LOVE IS NOT: LOVE IS NOT ENVIOUS, BOASTFUL, PROUD, RUDE, SELF-SEEKING, EASILY ANGERED, A RECORD KEEPER OF WRONGS, NOR DOES IT DELIGHT IN EVIL.
IF WE TAKE THIS LIST FROM PAUL IN THE LITERAL ENGLISH, WE MAY FEEL CONFIDENT THAT WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT. SO BE CAREFUL! PAUL HAS A DEEPER MEANING WITH THESE WORDS BEYOND LITERAL ENGLISH. LET’S TAKE A LOOK!
FIRST, LOVE IS PATIENT. THE WORD IS “MAKROTHYMEO” WHICH MEANS “SLOW TO BE RESENTFUL.” WE ARE NOT TO BE SHORT-TEMPERED OR SHORT ON PATIENCE WITH OTHERS.
ROMANS 5:8, “BUT GOD DEMONSTRATED HIS OWN LOVE FOR US IN THIS: WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US.” WE SHOULD NEVER GIVE UP ON ANYONE. WE ARE TO LAVISH OUR LOVE ON OTHERS WITHOUT A THOUGHT WHETHER WE THINK THEY ARE WORTHY OR NOT. LOVE IS PATIENT.
SECOND, LOVE IS KIND. THE WORD “CHRESTEUOMAI” MEANS “GOODNESS.” LOVE REACTS WITH GOODNESS AND DOES NOT WALK AWAY AND SAY IN DISGUST “WELL, THEN, FORGET IT” IF THE LOVE IS NOT RETURNED OR GETS MISTREATED. KINDNESS IS A LOVE THAT GIVES ITSELF IN THE SERVICE OF OTHERS. LOVE IS KIND.
THEN PAUL MOVES ON TO WHAT LOVE IS DOES NOT DO. FIRST, LOVE DOES NOT ENVY. TRUE LOVE DOES NOT HOLD A STRONG, PASSIONATE JEALOUSY TOWARD OTHERS. IT DOES NOT BECOME DISPLEASED WITH THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS AND IT DEFINITELY DOES NOT GET INTO RIVALRIES AGAINST OTHERS.
LOVE ALSO DOES NOT BOAST. CHRIST-LIKE LOVE GIVES OF ITSELF INSTEAD OF ASSERTING ITSELF. THE LITERAL TRANSLATION SAYS THAT WE ARE NOT A “WIND BAG” OR A “SHOW OFF.”
THEN PAUL GOES ON TO SAY THAT LOVE IS NOT RUDE WHICH REALLY MEANS THAT LOVE IS NOT DISGRACEFUL OR INDECENT. TRUE LOVE WILL AVOID THAT WHICH IS TASTELESS OR VULGAR.
LOVE ALSO DOES NOT SHOW SIGNS OF BEING SELF-SEEKING. OUR EXAMPLE OF CHRIST-LIKENESS SHOULD HAVE NO EVIDENCE THAT WE ARE SELF-CENTERED OR SELFISH. LOVE IS NOT FULL OF ITS OWN SELF NOR DOES IT INSIST THAT IT GETS ITS OWN WAY.
ANOTHER WAY LOVE DOES NOT SHOW ITSELF IS WHEN IT IS TOSSED OUT THE WINDOW BY A QUICK TEMPER. LOVE IS NOT EASILY ANGERED. LOVE IS NOT TOUCHY, OVER-SENSITIVE, EASILY PROVOKED, OR PUSHED TO THE POINT OF EXPLODING ON OTHERS. LOVE IS NOT SHARP TONGUED OR CONSTANTLY CRITICAL.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN, PAUL SAID THAT LOVE ALSO DOES NOT AROUSE OTHERS TO THIS SAME LEVEL OF ANGER OR CRITICALNESS. LOVE JUST DOESN’T GET HEATED TO THAT DEGREE.
ANOTHER GREAT IDEA PAUL GIVES US IS THAT LOVE DOES NOT KEEP RECORDS. THIS VERB “LOGIZOMAI” MEANS “DO NOT RECKON WITH EVIL” AND ALSO MEANS “TO TAKE NOTES” OR“TO KEEP ACCOUNT.” LOVE DOES NOT TAKE NOTICE OF EVERY SINGLE EVIL THAT SOMEONE DOES AND THEN RUBS THEIR NOSES IN IT AS A WAY OF HOLDING IT AGAINST THEM. LOVE LETS THINGS GO.
SO FAR, PAUL HAS TOLD US WHAT LOVE IS AND WHAT LOVE IS NOT. NOW PAUL MOVES ON TO DESCRIBE WHAT LOVE ALWAYS WILL BE. THE WORD “ALWAYS” MEANS “ALL THINGS,” AND “ALL-ENCOMPASSING” TO EMPHASIZE THAT LOVE IS NOT ALL OURS.
IN OTHER WORDS, LOVE IS NOT SINGLENESS OR HELD ALONE IN ONE’S SELF. LOVE WILL ALWAYS INVOLVE SOMEONE ELSE. LOVE WILL NEVER BE ALL ABOUT ME NOR ALL ABOUT YOU. IT HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE AS WELL.
THAT IS WHY PAUL COULD EASILY SAY THAT LOVE ALWAYS PROTECTS. THIS WORD MEANS “TO COVER” OR “TO ENDURE.” LOVE IS NOT “NIT-PICKY” BECAUSE IT COVERS OVER THE DIVERSITY FOUND IN OTHERS AND IT ENDURES THOSE ANNOYING DIFFERENCES SO THAT WE DON’T ALLOW THEM TO GET ON OUR NERVES.
BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, IT IS ALSO A DEFENSIVE LOVE THAT SAYS IF I WITNESS SOMEONE VIOLATING THEIR COVENANT TO BE A “PROTECTOR,” THEN I WILL GO TO AID OF THE ONE BEING VICITMIZED SO THAT THEY ARE NOT HURT OR EMBARRASSED.
WHEN WE TRULY LOVE WITH A CHRIST-LIKE LOVE, THEN WE WILL ALWAYS TRUST. WE MUST ALWAYS SEE THE BEST IN OTHERS AND BE EAGER TO BELIEVE THE BEST INSTEAD OF THE WORST. LOVE ALWAYS GIVES THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS UNDERSTANDING! THIS DOES NOT MEAN LOVE IS GULLIBLE NOR DOES IT OVERLOOK SIN AND THE LAW. THIS DOESN’T THROW DISCIPLINE AND PUNISHMENT OUT THE WINDOW. WE REFUSE TO BE ABUSED AND LOVE THE ABUSER TO THE POINT OF BRINGING THEM TO A HEALING PATTERN OF LIVING.
LOVE ALWAYS PROTECTS, TRUSTS, AND NOW IT ALSO HOPES. LOVE ABSOLUTELY REFUSES TO TAKE FAILURE AS FINALITY. LOVE IS OPTOMISTIC AND MAKES IT A POINT TO LOOK “FORWARD TO” WHAT CAN BE RATHER THAN LOOKING “BACK AT” WHAT WAS.
ROMANS 8:28, “AND WE KNOW THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD WORKS FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE WHO LOVE HIM….” LOVE LIVES IN REALITY AND NOT THE IRREVERSABLE PAST. LOVE HOPES.
AND NOW, LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, LOVE ALWAYS PERSEVERES. THIS WORD “HYPOMENO” IS AN ACTION-VERB TO EMPHASIZE THAT LOVE HAS FORTITUDE, ENDURANCE, AND IS TOTALLY POSITIVE.
THIS MILITARY TERM IS USED TO BRING US INTO REALITY THAT THIS LOVE GOES UNDISMAYED AND IS NEVER OVERWHELMED. THAT MEANS LOVE VIGOROUSLY GIVES ITSELF WHATEVER THE DIFFICULTY OR HARDSHIP. LOVE SAYS “NOTHING CAN STOP ME!”
AND THAT IS ALMOST IT! PAUL SAID THAT LOVE IS: PATIENT, KIND AND THAT IT ALWAYS TRUST, ALWAYS HOPES AND ALWAYS PERSEVERES. PAUL ALSO SAID THAT LOVE IS NOT ENVIOUS, BOASTFUL, PROUD, RUDE, SELF-SEEKING, EASILY ANGERED, A RECORD KEEPER OF WRONGS, NOR DOES IT DELIGHT IN EVIL.
BUT PAUL DID NOT STOP THERE. AS IF IT WOULD BE CHALLENGING ENOUGH TO DO ALL THAT HE HAS SAID ALREADY, PAUL DRIVES IT ALL HOME BY SAYING “LOVE NEVER FAILS.”
THE WORD USED HERE IS “PIPTO” WHICH TRANSLATES “DOES NOT FALL DOWN,” “DOES NOT BECOME INVALID” OR “DOES NOT SUFFER RUIN.” IN OTHER WORDS: LOVE IS PERMANENT AND IT DOES NOT COLLAPSE OR FALL APART.
LOVE, LOVES NO MATTER WHAT. NO WONDER, PAUL SAID TO LET HIM “…SHOW YOU THE MOST EXCELLENT WAY.” WHAT AN INCREDIBLE CONCEPT THAT WE CAN LAVISH OUT AGAPE LOVE AND NOT NEED ANY APPARENT REASON WHATSOEVER!
THE CHOICE IS ALL UP TO US! WILL WE BE INSTRUMENTS OF RESOUNDING MELODY OF GOD’S LOVE OR WILL WE LOOK OUT FOR OUR OWN INTEREST WITH THE TEETH-CLINCHING NOISE THAT DEAFENS THE EARS OF OTHERS TO THE PRECIOUS GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST? VERSE 13: “AND NOW THESE THREE REMAIN: FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE. BUT THE GREATES OF THESE IS LOVE.”
