GIVE HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE
TEXT: Romans 13:1-10
DISCUSSION:
1. On her 60th birthday, a woman from Brooklyn decided to prepare her last will and testament. She went to her rabbi to make two final requests: First, she insisted on cremation. “What is your second request?” the rabbi asked. “I want my ashes scattered over Bloomingdale’s.” “Bloomingdale’s. Why over Bloomingdale’s?” the rabbi said. “Then I’ll be sure that my daughters visit me twice a week.”
2. The story is funny but sad because it plays on the fact that many people will go through life never receiving the honor they deserve. Often through no fault of their own.
3. * This is the Memorial Day Weekend. It is the time of year that we remember and honor those who have sacrificed for our country.
4. This morning we are going to consider some people that God instructs us to give honor to.
5. We would do well to begin with a definition of honor.
6. To Honor means to value to respect to hold precious to support.
C. Many times parents will remind their children of this commandment and it is for the children. However, it is even more for the adults.
D. Children do not understand but parents – adults do.
7. Stop And Think. To whom does God expect me to give honor? I am to give honor to:
DISCUSSION
I. My Parents
A. God commands it.
Mat 15:3-6 He answered and said to them, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? {4} "For God commanded, saying, ’Honor your father and your mother’; and, ’He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ {5} "But you say, ’Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God"; {6} ’then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.commands it.
B. Disrespect is a sign of a depraved mind.
Rom 1:28-32 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; {29} being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, {30} backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents {31} undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; {32} who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
C. God Blesses those who honor their parents.
II. My Government.
Romans 13:1-7
III. God’s Shepherds
1 Tim 5:17-19 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. {18} For the Scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain," and, "The laborer is worthy of his wages." {19} Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.
Heb 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
