IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, GOD INSTITUTED A WORTHY WAY OF GIVING BEFORE HIS VERY EYES. EVEN TODAY, JESUS IS CONCERNED IN OUR WAY OF GIVING
I. JESUS IS CONCERNED IN WATCHING THE MOTIVE OF OUR GIVING (VS.41-42)
a. He is aware of our crowd-seeking motive (v.41)
“Threw in”: with a distance, sounds to solicit or call everyone’s attention”
b. He is aware of our God-seeking motive (v.42)
“Put in”: within her reach, without everyone’s notion”
II. JESUS IS CONCERNED IN TEACHING THE VALUE OF OUR GIVING (V.43)
a. That giving is valued not by how much is given.
“Large amount” (NIV), contributed” (RSV)
b. That giving is valued by the Spirit it is given.
“Poverty-striken” (AB); “Put in more than all others”
III. JESUS IS CONCERNED IN JUDGING THE QUALITY OF OUR GIVING (v.44)
a. He condemns our trivial giving (v.44a)
“Out of their surplus” (NASV)
b. He commends our sacrificial giving (v.44b)
“Out of her deep-poverty” (Amplified); Put in all she owned” (NASV)
