Honor and Obedience

Pastor Glenn Newton (Kids Sermon) 5-30-04

Greet the Kids.... This morning we are going to have a good time learning about what

God has said.... How many of you know that God can talk to us?

Today we are going to focus and learn about two words that God has given to us... If you

will listen and learn what these two words mean.... Next Sunday during Sunday School, if

you can tell your teacher what these two words are that we are going to learn about

today.... they will have a small prize for you.... so let’s listen really good.

Object Lesson #1 “Quick Change” Listen to God you whole Life.

Say, Sometimes you might think that only grown ups need to listen to God. But

God wants everyone -- for their whole lives -- to listen to Him. When you listen to

someone, it’s important to pay careful attention to what the person says and does.

Let’s find out how good we are at paying attention.

1. Look at me for 10 seconds, pay attention to how I am dressed.

2. Close your eyes...... ( change one thing)

3. Ask the children to carefully look at you again, and raise your hand if you know

what change I made to how I look..... remember to talk about how they are paying

careful attention.

The Bible says, “Listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in

his eyes.” Exodus 15:26

What does this verse say about listening and paying careful attention?

say, Listening to God’s voice helps us know how to love and obey Him. We can listen to

God’s voice as we read and hear Bible stories and as we pray to Him.

So... Are your ready to Listen? Are you going to pay careful Attention? Good. Now I’m

going to tell you our Two Words that we are going to Learn about Today... Are You

Ready?

The First Word Is “Honor”. On the count of three let’s say the word Honor real loud...

One, Two, Three... Honor.

The Bible tells us in the 10 Commandments, in fact it’s the 5th commandment..... “Honor

your Father and you Mother.”

What do you think it means to Honor our your Father and Mother? Anybody

David - A Good Son

(Bible Story)

1 Sam. 17:12-20; 22:1-4

“I wonder how my boys are getting along in the army,” thought Davids father,

Jesse. “Are they safe? Are they getting enough to eat? How is the war going?”

Jesse’s 3 oldest son’s -- David’s brothers -- were soldiers in King Saul’s army.

Right now, the army was fighting the Philistine army. The Philistines were strong, mean

enemies. Things were not going very well for Saul’s army. The Philistines had a giant

soldier named Goliath. No one was brave enough to fight him. So for 40 days, the two

armies sat and waited. Do you know how tall Goliath was? 9 foot tall... Look back at

and see how tall 9 foot tall is........ Do you think you would be scared of someone that tall

if they were mean?

Let’s find out what happened....

“Now in those days, there were no radios or TVs to tell people what was

happening in a war. The only way to find out if the soldiers were OK was to go where the

army was and see. Also, the army didn’t always have enough food for the soldiers. So

soldiers needed their families to bring them food.

David, Jessie’s youngest son, was taking care of his father’s sheep near Bethlehem.

Jessie sent for David to come to him.

“Go to Saul’s army,” Jesse said to David. “Take cooked grain and 10 loaves of

bread and give them to your brothers. Also take these 10 chunks of cheese to give to their

commander. Find out if your brothers are OK. Then bring new about them.”

“I will Father,” said David. “I will leave first thing tomorrow morning.”

Then next day, David OBEYED everything his father told him to do. (what did David

do?) He found someone to take care of the sheep while he was gone. Then he took the

food and started out for Saul’s army camp. When David found his brothes, he gave them

the food and asked how they were doing. Later, after a very exciting battle when David

killed the Philistine giant Goliath, he went home with good news for his father.

Many years went by and David grew up. All that time, David OBEYED God and

his father. God was pleased with David. But King Saul was angry with David. He

wanted to kill David because he knew that someday David would become king instead of

Him. David had to run for his life. Do you know where David ran too?

David found a great hiding place in some caves. His father and mother and

brothers knew where he was. They came to the caves to be with David.

David was glad to see his family. But he was worried about his Mother and Father.

“Mom and Dad are Old.” David thought. “It isn’t safe for them to hide with me in this

cave. King Saul might find them and hurt them. And they can’t go with me when I have

to leave the cave to fight enemies. How can I keep my parents safe?”

God helped David to think of a plan. David went to see the king of the country of

Moab. Long ago, David’s great-grandmother Ruth had come from Moab. The king of

Moab did not like King Saul. Maybe he would help David.

David bowed down before the King of Moab. “Please help me,” David said.

“What do you want me to do?” asked the King.

Please let my mother and Father stay in your land until God shows me what He

will do for me.” David said. “They will be safer here.”

“They can stay,” said the King.

David left his parents in Moab and went back to his cave hideout. Someday, David would

be King of Israel, and he could bring his parents back home. But for now, while David

had to run, hide and fight, he was glad that his parents were safe.

Remember our commandment? Honor your Father and Mother.

Did David obey this command?

How?

say, God tells children to honor and obey their parents. David learned this important

commandment when he was a child. He obeyed it when he was young and after he grew

up. David honored God and his parents when he chose to obey this important rule.
