“Before You Walk Away”
Introduction: David would not divorce Michal following this event. He simply turned his affection to other women. How sad. Here is the counsel that I would have given to David to help in trying to keep their marriage together:
1. Remember your first love.
Michal was David’s first love. He was humble and excited about the prospects of marrying the King’s daughter before he killed Goliath. The Bible says that Michal loved David and desired to marry him too. There was a time of "love and romance."
We are to told to remember our first love in the Book of Revelations.
2. Remember she was willing to lay down her life for you.
When King Saul sent soldiers to the home of David to have him arrested and killed, Michal saved David’s life by sending David away and placing pillows under the sheets to make it look as if David was still in bed. She told the soldiers that David was sick in bed. Michal put her life on the line for her husband, and David was able to live.
I would counsel David, "Remember, you have a wife who was willing to die for you."
3. Remember your wedding vows.
Everyone looks to the King and the Queen as to "how a marriage ought to be." As Christians, God is looking to us to set an example to the world of what a Christian home is to be like. How sad when the report is that as many Christian people are getting a divorce as those who claim no faith. What an indictment! Knowing Christ ought to make a difference!
4. Remember, you will remember.
The Bible is a Forever Book. I am sure that David is not proud of his actions mentioned in these verses. I am sure that he has often uttered, "If I had it to do over again, I would have worked harder to have saved my first marriage."
Remember that in just a couple chapters from this event, David would be committing adultery with Bathsheba and murdering her husband, Urriah the Hittite.
If you David and Michal were made to have stood before a judge as to the reason for wanting a "divorce," what would David’s answer be? He would have to say something like this, "You see judge, it all starter when my wife said that I was a bad dancer..."
Isn’t it foolish the things that we argue about! Isn’t it a shame to those of who call ourselves Christians to allow our foolish pride to govern our lives.
Before you walk out of your marriage, think.
