Title: "Five Unfathomable Truths"
Introduction: Nicodemus was confused. As a teacher, he felt impressed to "stay after class" and talk to the master teacher. His basic complaint, "I don’t understand."
The reply of Christ is the basis for today’s outline. Nicodmus there are many things that you do not, and possibly will never totally understand, and yet you had better "believe."
St. Augustine said, "Understanding is the reward of faith, therefore, seek not to understand in order that you might believe, but rather, seek to believe in order that you might understand."
I submit to you five things in this text that are "Unfathomable Truths."
1. The miracle of Life.
Jesus talked about being born. I do not understand how that "in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth." But I believe it.
2. Eternal life.
Jesus mentions these words, "Believe on me and you shall have eternal life."
I do not understand how life can go on forever and ever and ever. I cannot comphrehend a "Kingdom of God." But I believe it.
3. A Place called Hell.
Jesus talked about "perishing," and "condemnation." When I read about a place that is called "everlasting torment, day and night." I cannot comphrehend a place called Hell. But I believe it.
4. The holiness of God.
John 3:20 reads, "For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."
I cannot understand how God is light, and that he is a God of total perfection. My imperfection cannot understand perfection. How can a perfect God offer to sinful man a place in his sinless heaven? God is Holy. I do not totally understand the sovereign holiness of God, but I believe it.
5. The grace of God.
(John 3:16 ) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
I cannot comprehend the "so loved" in this verse. In our last verse of study, man was hating God. In this verse, God is so loving man. Salvation is the gift of God. Jesus lovingly took the punishment for my hatred at the cross of calvary. He died for my sins, he was buried and he rose again from the dead on the third day.
I cannot understand the amazing grace of God. But, I believe it.
Do you?
