(PASSION READING)

II- Jesus was subjected to death.

The Crucifixion

• Pull arm out of joint

• Nails driven in hands (forearm) and feet

• Feet turned outward and nail driven through Achilles tendon

• Died from suffocation

• Break legs to speed up death- Didn’t do this to Jesus John 19:33

• Jesus already dead

• Pierced side, water and blood: Heart exploded

NAR: In 1968, the historical veracity for the crucifixion of Jesus took another leap forward. A mass gravesite in Israel was uncovered that contained 35 male bodies, each of which died a brutal death around the rime of the Jewish revolt against Rome in 70 AD. An inscription identified one of the men as Yohan Ben Ha’galgol. Studies of his bones performed by specialists from the Hadassah Medical School determined this man was in his late 20’s and stood 5’6”.

Dramatically, these studies also showed that the man had been crucified in a manner resembling the crucifixion of Jesus. A large spike had been hammered inside the Achilles tendon. Spikes were also driven through his lower forearms, just below the wrists. The bone studies also revealed that the man’s legs were crushed below the knees. In John 19:31-33, we read that Roman executions expedited the death of crucifixion victims by breaking their legs- this caused them to suffocate quickly because they could no longer push up with their legs to inflate their lungs.

NAR: Crucifixion was a form of capital punishment reserved for slaves and those who were a threat to Rome. This explains why Pontius Pilate chose crucifixion as the penalty for Jesus Christ, since Jesus claimed a form of “Kingship” that threatened those in religious and political power.

Why did God allow this?

“ When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners…. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Romans 5:6&8 (NLT)

Why did Jesus have to die?

• All have sinned-

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

• Justice demands a payment-

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

• Somebody had to pay for your sins- You or someone else

• Good news- Everything you have ever done wrong- PAID IN FULL!!

• Tetlestai- It is Finished! What? The payment
