And What Will Ye Do In The End Thereof?
By-Evangelist Gary Huckaby
Jeremiah 5:1-31;
Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely. O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God. I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased. How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses. They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’S. For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say. Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men. And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword. Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you. And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours. Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
Jamieson Faussett Brown’s commentary says about the phrase "what will you do in the end thereof?’
The end thereof--or the fatal issue of this sinful course when divine judgments shall come.
From Matthew Henry’s concise commentary we read the following about our passages of Scripture.
v19-31 Unhumbled hearts are ready to charge God with being unjust in their afflictions. But they may read their sin in their punishment. If men will inquire wherefore the Lord doeth hard things unto them, let them think of their sins. The restless waves obeyed the Divine decree, that they should not pass the sandy shores, which were as much a restraint as lofty mountains; but they burst all restraints of God’s law, and were wholly gone into wickedness. Neither did they consider their interest. While the Lord, year after year, reserves to us the appointed weeks of harvest, men live on his bounty; yet they transgress against him. Sin deprives us of God’s blessings; it makes the heaven as brass, and the
earth as iron. Certainly the things of this world are not the best things; and we are not to think, that, because evil men prosper, God allows their practices. Though sentence against evil works is not executed speedily, it will be executed. Shall I not visit for these things? This speaks the certainty and the necessity of God’s judgments. Let those who walk in bad ways consider that an end will come, and there will be bitterness in the latter end.
The message that I would like to give to you is this; "And what will YE do in the end thereof?"
One day, maybe even today, we all shall come to the end of what we know as our life on this earth. And what shall it be for us in the end thereof?
AT DEATH
Death Is A Sure Event For All The Word of God tells us this fact in Hebrews 9:27; And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
It has been said that the only two sure things in life are death and taxes. This is only a half truth though, friends. Only death is sure, for many do not pay taxes. Many have found ways to avoid paying taxes. Many evade paying them, even when they know that is against the law.
Death however cannot be evaded, or avoided, it is as sure as the breath you are breathing right at this moment, and death will come to all men. That is the Word of God.
Now I know right off that some will argue that there were two men in the Old Testament who did not see death. Enoch and Elijah. I do know too, that the Bible says that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. 1Corinthians 15:50; Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
Since all men with the exception of the Lord Jesus Christ are sinners by birth, then these two men must have known death at some point of their translation into Heaven, somewhat like the raptured believers will know as we depart from this world at faster than light speed (the twinkling of an eye 1Cor 15:52). We must remember here the definition of the word "DEATH." Death means separation. Separation of the soul and spirit from the body, or separation of the soul and spirit and body from the Lord.
When the sinful body of man comes to the end of its sin, it dies and the soul and spirit of the believer goes immediately into the presence of the Lord. 2Corinthians 5:8; We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
When the body of an unbeliever comes to the end of it’s sin on earth it too dies, and their soul will immediately go to hell. In the story that Jesus gave in Luke16:22-23; And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Jesus is telling of two people, one was a believer, and one was not. The beggar was the believer, but the rich man was an unbeliever. Both died, both went somewhere, but both went not to the same place. Their bodies both went to the grave, back to the dust from which they came, but in this true story, the beggar was carried by angels to Abraham’s bosom (the place that Old Testament believers went at death) This place is referred to in Jesus words to the thief on the cross when He told him, Luke 23:43; And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
The rich man however, went to hell, the place of torment for lost souls.
"And what will ye do in the end thereof? " when the time to die comes to you. Will you be carried away by angels, or will you die and lift up your eyes being in torment? There is a way to know which way you will go in the end, and that way is the only way. Jesus said in John 14:6; Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
If you want to go to Heaven when death claims it’s reward of you, you must know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Jesus came to save us from our sins. He gave His life a ransom for all who would receive Him as their personal Saviour.
John 3:15-16; That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
One of my most used passages in leading a lost soul to Christ is found in the book of Romans chapter ten. Romans 10:9-13; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
AT THE JUDGMENT
Just as sure as Death is in this life; Judgment is as sure in our next life. Everyone will stand before the Lord Jesus in judgment. Both the child of God and the unbeliever. There are separate judgments for these two groups of people, and they will take place at different times in the eternal, but both will definitely take place.
And what will ye do in the end thereof? for you? How have you lived your life on earth? Are you doing the works of a believer, and according to God’s Word, or are you an unbelieving sinner, set on working your way to a better life? Working your way to Heaven by doing your own works.
The Word of God tells us in Eph 2:4-10; But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in
heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
And what will ye do in the end thereof? for you when you come to judgment?" Will you stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ as a believer giving account of your good and bad works since salvation, or will you stand at the Great White Throne Judgment as a lost unbelieving sinner condemned to hell. To eternal punishment. Only you can give the answer to that question. No one else can answer it for you. And what will ye do in the end thereof?
Think of the end results of your good works for the Lord Child of God. Think of the reward that you will receive for doing God’s will and works, to help others come to know Him. Even a cup of water in His name brings a reward that can’t be lost. Mark 9:41; For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
Matthew tells us that even a cup of water in the name of a disciple will have a reward that can’t be lost. Matthew 10:42; And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
I remember once while I was visiting on a Saturday, it was around noon and I had been at it for about three hours. I decided to stop at a trailer that sat back from the Highway a good distance. When I knocked at the door of the home, a man in his late thirties came to the door and said come in. I introduced myself, and told the man that I was the Pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church in Woodbury, Georgia, and that I was visiting and inviting people to Church. He ask me if I would like to come in and meet his family, to which I said I would. I could tell that this man was in very bad health. He was as skinny as a rail, and his skin was very rough. Immediately I felt compassion for this man, as country as could be, and very friendly, so I followed him into the trailer. He led me to the back room of the trailer, and there I found three little girls, cute as could be, and his wife who also looked to have bad health. They invited me to have lunch with them, as they had a pot of Macaroni and cheese cooked. (That was their meal, they had nothing else.) After talking to the family I took the Bible and led all five to the Lord Jesus Christ, all confess Him as Saviour, and they came to our Church, became faithful members. They began to grow in Christ, their health became better, their lives witnessed for Christ. They were model Christians in our community until they moved away. I did one good work, I shared the Gospel with them and look at the end results for their lives while they were living among us. And what will ye do in the end thereof?
If you are a child of God and are not sharing the good news with the lost, what will ye do in the end thereof? When you stand before the Lord Jesus Christ who died for all of mankind what will you do in the end? When you know that many whom you were around during your life on earth, are eternally lost, and what will ye do in the end thereof?
Dear lost sinner, and what will ye do in the end thereof? when you stand before the Great White Throne Judgment. The judgment for every unbeliever in Jesus Christ? Don’t let this opportunity to be saved pass you by, receive Christ as your Lord and Saviour right now!
