A Politically Incorrect Look At Homosexuality
Rom 1:18-32
There are those out there who seek to make legitimate something that is sinful and harmful to our country.
Events in the Past Few Months that prompt this sermon!
- Episcopal Church ordains an openly Gay man as a Bishop last fall. The only good thing that can be said is that the Episcopal church’s attendance and income have been declining since.
- Massachusetts - The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled last November that homosexuals should have the right to marry - That state is in a war as forces are trying to pass a law that will define marriage as an act between a man and a woman.
- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom - gave orders to allow gay couples to marry - ignoring a law ratified by a majority of the State’s voters that defined marriage as an act between a man and a woman.
Do not think it will just go away if we ignore it. The contrary is most likely. This will grow and explode into many more and bigger problems. Already, a county in New Mexico is considering issuing marriage licences to gay couples and the Mayor Daley of Chicago as said that he is in favor of the idea of allowing gay weddings in the Windy City.
What we as Christians need now, is simple, we need to be grounded in what the Bible says about homosexuality:
I. What the Bible Say about the Sin of
Homosexuality:
A. Rom 1:18-32 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
1. There are a few things to note in this passage:
2. The context, starting at Verse 18 is that God is angry and His wrath is being poured out because of ungodliness.
3. They did not acknowledge God and their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
4. V26 God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
5. V32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
B. I Cor 6: 9-11Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
C. Sodom & Gomorrah
1. Gen 19
a. The Angels visit Sodom - they want to sleep in the town square, Lot insists upon them coming to stay at his house.
b. The men of the city come to Lots house and demand that the strangers be brought out to them so that they can have sex with them.
c. Lot tried to hinder the men, but they threaten to do worse to Lot, it was then that Lot was saved by the Angels and the men struck blind.
2. Jude 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
D. Lev 18: 22“‘Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.
E. Lev 20:13 “‘If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
II. Why Homosexuality is Bad for our Society:
A. The Family is the Back bone of the Society.
1. When God created the family, He created it with a man and woman as the foundation.
a. Gen 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
b. Gen 2:18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
c. Gen 2:22-24 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’for she was taken out of man.”
24For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
2. It takes a man and a woman together to produce off-spring.
3. Families provide a frame work in which values and morals are taught. Yet, how do you pass on morals in a situation where the family is based on a immorality?
4. Societies must produce physically, emotionally and morally healthy children. And, as literally millennia of experience have proven – and your own God-given common sense tells you – the best way to do this is through traditional marriage.
B. Where will it end?
1. Once you take away the traditional and Biblical concept of what a family is an allow two men to marry each other or you allow two women to marry each other, you open the flood gates to any and all forms of marriage.
2. What if a man wants to marry a man and a woman, well why not, if you have taken away the Biblical concept?
3. That could be true for bothers and sisters who want to marry, or parents and children and so on.
4. No matter the combination, once you say no to God’s way, you can not say no, to any other way.
5. You say, it won’t happen? Guess what, a man in Utah, who is being charged with polygamy is making the same argument that has been used in Massachusetts and San Francisco in a motion to dismiss his case. It has not worked yet, but, if it is not stopped now, it will probably work next time.
C. This Goes a lot Deeper.
1. One of the Major Problems with the whole thing going on in California is not just that they are marrying homosexuals.
2. They are violating the law to do it.
3. When we as a society flaunt our laws and do nothing when they are broken, it sends a signal that if we do not like laws all we have to do is object to them based on whatever reason we can find and then do it.
4. It weakens the Law - it weakens our society!
5. I can not help but remember the last time something like this happened and how different the popular media reacted.
a. Roy Moore -- who was then chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court -- was blasted by secular media for refusing to follow a federal court order that called for the removal of the granite monument.
b. In contrast, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is being portrayed as a cult hero -- even though he clearly has violated the law.
III. As Christians - What do we need to do:
A. Actions that we should consider:
1. Pray about this situation - pray that it would stop - pray that common sense would break out.
2. Get Active in Supporting Family Friendly legislation:
a. Federal Marriage Constitutional Amendment - S. J. Res. 26 would add the following to the Constitution:
Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, not the Constitution of any State, not State or Federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents there of be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.
b. The Religious Liberties Restoration Act - S. 1558:
This bill will reserve to the States (a) the power to display the Ten Commandments on or within State property; (b) the power to recite the Pledge of Allegiance on or within State property (noting that the official Pledge will remain as it currently reads, including those two words that have been such anathema to the Left -- "under God"); and (c) the power to recite the national motto -- "In God we trust" -- on or within State property.
c. A State Bill SJR 7 seeks to start the process to amend the Indiana Constitution to protect Indiana laws defining marriage as one man and one woman.
This is a long process it is currently being stalled by one party. If it is not passed this year, it could dely the process by as much as two years.
3. Contact Your US Senators and US Representative, let them know how you feel about homosexual marriages on the first two:
4. Contact your state Representative for the State Bill.
B. We need to treat homosexuals with love and compassion, but not justify their sin.
1. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
2. Dr. Bare:
a. Former Medical Missionary.
b. Worked at the U of Neb as the Director of the Health Center. He also taught a couple of classes on health.
c. During the class, when they were talking about aids, he said that the only way to make sure you did not get aids from a sexual encounter is to remain celibate until you marry, marry a person who is also a virgin and both of you must commit to a monogamous lifestyle.
d. Someone objected to this statement and Dr. Bare was brought before a disciplinary board and told that he could not make such statements again. They were not politically correct.
e. He said that he had no desire to be PC, but was worried about being medically correct and that according to the Center of Disease Control, this was the best sound medical advice.
f. The Disciplinary board said that if he was to continue teaching his class, he could no longer use the words Virgin and monogamous. That those were to moralistic.
g. He said that he could not do that. They insisted on his resignation, which he gave.
H. Back in his office, while he was coordinating his departure, he received a phone call from the Gay and Lesbian advocacy group advisor. They were insisting on a meeting with him. They said it was so important that if he was to name the time he could make it, they would be there.
i. Not happy about having to go to this meeting, he showed up any way. When he got there, they gave him an award for being a Great Humanitarian
j. They said that they knew that he was a Christian and that he believed that Homosexuality was a sin.
k. But in spite of his moral disagreement with them, He treated the Gay and Lesbian with more compassion and care than the other Drs. and Nurses who said that they did not have a problem with homosexuality.
l. The Gay and Lesbian group went to the University administration and got Dr. Bare reinstated both in the health department and the classroom.
3. Dr. Bare demonstrated the Love of Jesus to Homosexuals in a very real way. We need to be willing to treat the gays the same way.
