Text:
(1 Sam 18:1 KJV) And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
Title:
“Choosing your Best Friend”
David and Jonathan were "Best Friends." Why would they choose one another for best friends. Let me name for you some qualities of Jonathan that you should look for in a best friend relationship.
1. Choose a friend who knows his Bible...
1 Samuel 13: 22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
Jonathan had a sword and knew how to use it against the enemy of God’s people. The Bible is a two edged sword. Choose a friend who knows and loves their Bible.
3. Choose a friend who has a vision for his life...
Chapter 14:1 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
Jonathan was not content to stay in the valley, he had a mountain to climb. He challenged his armour bearer to come against the enemy.
2. Choose a friend who lives by Faith...
14:6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.
Jonathan had his faith in the Lord, He knew his only chance of victory was to depend upon the Lord to help in battle.
4. Choose a friend who gives you his whole heart...
1 Sam. 18:4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
Jonathan held nothing back. He was a whole-hearted Christian. Note how Jonathan humbled himself before David. In much the same way, we need to daily humble ourselves before the Lord.
Conclusion:
Choose Jesus to be your best friend!
(Prov 18:24 KJV) A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
He held nothing back. He went to the cross. Let us surrender to Him!
