Sometimes the simplest of ideas can be the most profound. This is the case with this simple little Children’s song written from the teachings of Christ. As Christians we are to be lights in the world. But, what exactly does that mean?

MAIN BODY

I. You are light. Matthew 5:14

A. Light chases away darkness.

B. Jesus’ disciples dispel the darkness (evil) of the world.

C. The church (city) cannot be hid when it is fulfilling Christ’s mission in the community.

II. The Purpose of Your Light. Matthew 5:15

A. Men don’t light a lamp and then hide it.

B. God brought light into your life. 2 Cor. 4:6

C. God intended for your light to be seen.

2. Titus 2:7–8

III. Letting Your Light Shine. Matthew 5:16

A. As a Christian your light will shine.

1. We should “let” it shine before men.

2. We should not “shine” it before men.

B. The purpose of letting your light shine:

1. Not self–gratification, honor, or glory.

2. It is to glorify or praise God.

CONCLUSION

You are a light that God has turned on for the purpose of being seen in the world. Let your light shine so that God may be glorified!
