THE ETERNAL WORD BECAME FLESH
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14.
"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
"Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:5-11 (NKJV)
I. THE WORD WHO WAS!
"Then God said, ’Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness….So God created man is His own image; in the image of God He created him." Genesis 1:26-27. Read also Colossians 1:15-17.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made." John 1:1-3.
The Word was co-eternal with God the Father.
The Word was co-existent with God the Father.
The Word was co-equal with God the Father.
II. THE WORD WHO BECAME FLESH!
"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:5-8.
In His humanity, He was able to "sympathize with our weaknesses inasmuch as He was in all points tempted as are we, yet without sin." Hebrews 4:15. He said: "I thirst." (John 19:28).
As He was dying on the cross He experienced devastating heartbreak and loneliness crying out "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" Mark 15:34.
III. THE WORD WHO IS!
"Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:9-11.
We recognize Him as….
Our Savior: "He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him…"
Our Intercessor: "…since He always lives to make intercession for them." (Hebrews 7:25)
Our soon-coming King: "Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." Titus 2:13.
