Today’s Sermon Title

The Compassion of Jesus Christ

By-Evangelist Gary Huckaby

Webster defines the word "Compassion" as; Pity or Sympathy. From the Greek "Compassion" is defined as "Inward Affection, Pity or Sympathy, yearning.

What compassion means to us today literally is "Suffering With Another!"

Our message today has many Scripture verses for each of the six points I would like to make, so please have your Bible ready to follow along as each point is covered in this message.

In our world today, we have to look to see compassion among the general populous. Often though, we do see signs of compassion among the people, youth helping the elderly. Men stopping to change a flat tire for a helpless traveler, usually a lady. Just recently I saw a work truck stopped at a cross road, and another local person stopped and helping to jump start their vehicle. I visited recently with a Pastor friend at a local nursing home, where the elderly go to live under the care of nurses and doctors. While there this Pastor friend offered soft drinks to all who came to the service, and gave many two or three cans of drinks to take back to their roommates. You and I often confuse generosity and compassion, but it was this Pastors compassion to lift up the elderly by being generous to them. It was his compassion that caused him to act upon his generosity. Generosity comes from one’s compassion, and compassion is in dire need in our world today. Thus I want to show you from the Scripture the Compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Compassion For Souls,

Compassion On The Lost Sheep

In Matthew 9:36, we read; But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Jesus was moved with compassion! Lost souls moved Christ to cry out to them, to seek them, to save them. Again in the book of Mark we see Jesus moved with compassion. Mark 6:34; And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

Compassion will move you to do something for those upon whom you have that compassion, and surely Jesus moved for these lost sheep by surrendering His life’s blood on the cross to provide forgiveness for sin. He died for you and He died for me upon that cross. Then He rose from the dead to show victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. He told us in John 3, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Do you know His compassion in your life? Do you have compassion for those who are lost in sin, or do you just hate them. Remember dear Christian you and I were once lost as they are today, and it is our job to tell them that there is forgiveness in Christ.

Compassion To the Sick

Turn to the book of Matthew 14:14 and let us see Jesus compassion for the sick folks of His ministry.

And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. And again in,

Mark 1:41; And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

Jesus loves sick people! He also loves those who are well, but He was moved with that "inward Affection" toward sick people. I know somewhat of this compassion as I have seen my children, and grandchildren go through sickness, and always I feel moved for them. I during my three Pastorates often visited the local hospitals reaching out to sick people. It didn’t matter if they were members of our congregation or not, I always tried to seek out those who needed the message of hope which is only found in Jesus Christ.

During Jesus ministry on earth Jesus often was confronted with sick people. While in the desert places, multitudes followed Him, and there in the desert places Jesus healed them. Those who stayed home didn’t receive this healing from the Lord as that they were not present to receive His healing touch or words. The same is also true today. Many times members of Churches do not have the healing touch of God because they are not among those who have been given the authority to pray for their healing.

James 5:13-15; Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

I find that today there are many who do not believe in Divine healing, but the Bible has not changed in it wording to those who are the elders of the Church to be a part of the healing of many. When it is God’s will to heal the sick, He will do it if these are present to follow the clear teaching of the Scripture. But just as in Jesus day, often they stay at home and miss the blessing of being healed as they did in Jesus day of ministry.

Compassion For The Hungry

In Matthew 15:32, the Bible tells us; Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have

compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

Mark 8:1-2; In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:

Jesus had compassion for those who were hungry. He knew hunger as no other man with the exception of maybe, Moses. Jesus before He preached His first sermon, or taught His first lesson went into the wilderness and fasted for forty days and nights, and the bible tells us that afterwards that He was an hungered. Matthew 4:1-2; Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. Jesus knew what hunger felt like physically, just as do many everyday that passes. Many in the world today are living on garbage and trash of others. Many have more than they could ever need, and in this country much food is often wasted and poured back into the ground, when so many around the globe go to bed hungry night after night. It is heart breaking to see a child going hungry, and even sad to see an older person who is doing without food because of some reason. We should have compassion on the hungry, because Jesus did, and still does.

Compassion For The Blind

In Matthew 20:29-34; And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O

Lord, thou Son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

Jesus had compassion for the blind. Many blind people received their sight at His touch. But there is another thought here I would like to pass on to you. Many are blind among us, not in the physical sense, but spiritually blind. Jesus can touch both, the physical and the spiritual. Jesus has compassion on you if you are blind my friend, and He will open your eyes to His person if you will come with a penitent heart and receive his gift of eternal life.

Compassion On The Unclean

Mark 1:40-42; And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

Leprosy is a affliction that makes the physical body unclean. It is caused by sin in one’s life. Many who had rebelled against God were stricken with this unclean disease. One such person was Moses sister,

Miriam. Numbers 12:10; And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam

became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.

The Lord Jesus has compassion on the unclean of the world, and especially the unclean in spirit. His blood cleanses us from all uncleanness.

Compassion For The Sorrowful

Luke 7:13-14; And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

If you have ever had a loved one die, you know something of the plight of this widow woman. Her son had died, and when the Lord Jesus saw her, he had compassion on her. He didn’t have compassion on the dead lad, but his mother. He knew her sorrow, He knew her tears, and His compassion caused Him to raise the woman’s son from the dead.

Jesus know and has compassion on you too, when you have great sorrow. Trust in His great love and have faith in Him during your sorrow.

He has compassion toward you and me too! In Matthew 11:28-30; Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour this day? If today were your last on earth, and today you died, do you know that you would go to heaven to live forever with the Lord Jesus Christ? If you can not answer that question with a definite, yes! Then bow to the Son of God. Confess to Him that you know He died for your sins, and that He arose again for your salvation. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Do it right now.
