The Lord’s Desires For You
INTRODUCTION
A. In today’s passage, David is coming to the end of his journey as King of Israel.
B. A number of things have happened up to this point and we won’t take time to cover all of them.
C. There are some things we will cover briefly;
1. David had lost two sons.
a. Amnon
1. Absalom, who had tried to kill David also, for selfish reasons, had killed Amnon.
2. Amnon had done a totally wrong by acting upon feelings he had for his sister. He loved her and was vexed for her.
3. He raped her.
b. Absalom decided to take things in his own hands and died doing it.
1. The scripture says that he was a very good-looking man with beautiful hair.
2. We are also told that he had won the hearts of Israel, by deception too.
3. He set up Amnon and tried to set up David, to kill them both.
4. He successfully killed Amnon, but did not kill David, even though he tried hard.
5. He met His death by getting hung in an oak tree by his hair and being stabbed in the heart with darts. The scripture says that David’s army finished him off.
2. David has been brought back to Jerusalem by the tribe of Judah
3. He is currently passing the crown down to another son.
4. The temple had to be built, but the Lord told David he could not build it because David was a man of war and had shed blood.
D. The Lord chose a son of David to build the temple; his name was Solomon.
E. David is proclaiming this to Israel and starts by proclaiming that the Lord had chosen him above his whole family to be king of Israel forever.
F. Let’s look at some things you should know and do when God chooses you.
A GOD CHOSEN MAN PROCLAIMS GOD’S LOVE. VS. 4
A. David felt honored because the Lord had chosen him to be king over Israel.
B. In the New Testament, Jesus told the disciples they were going to be as kings.
C. David makes a statement here that we should look at; ‘He liked me to make me king over all of Israel.’
1. He liked Him.
2. He didn’t just like him; He loved Him.
3. It is claimed in the scripture, that David was a man after God’s own heart.
D. You need to know that God loves you.
1. It is His desire to make you as a king.
2. It is His desire that you should be saved.
3. It is Hid desire that none should perish but have everlasting life.
E. It is so much His desire for you that he sent His Only Begotten Son to take your place on the cross so you might be saved.
F. We also see in verse 6 that the Lord proclaimed, “For I have chosen him to be my son.”
G. You were chosen to be saved, we have all been chosen to be saved, it is up to you to accept what God has chosen for you.
H. If you chose Christ he will be your father too. Vs. 6
A GOD CHOSEN MAN’S KINGDOM IS ESTABLISHED FOREVER. Vs. 7
A. This is probably one of the prettiest pictures in this passage.
B. This is a rebuttal to those who don’t believe in eternal security.
C. “MOREOVER I WILL ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM FOREVER”
1. When the Lord does something, He does it quickly.
2. He does not need man to do anything when He does it.
3. He wants us to serve Him and worship Him, but when He saves a person, He establishes His Kingdom forever. FOREVER IS NEVER ENDING!
D. Here He is making another statement also; Jesus came from the tribe of Judah, the one David came from.
E. The Lord was establishing that through this man’s linage that Jesus Christ would be born and would die on the cross for your sin and would be buried and would raise again on the third day, according to the scripture.
F. Jesus Christ is King of Kings and will be whether you are ever saved or not.
G. He expects us to keep His commandments and judgments too.
1. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
2. Do you love Jesus?
3. I want to ask the church something today, “How much do you want Christ seen in your life?
A GOD CHOSEN MAN PASSES ON AN INHERITANCE. VS. 8
A. I you look at David’s life, you would know that he wasn’t perfect.
B. In fact you will find in 1Choronicles 21:17, where David took the blame for counting the men of Israel without approval from God, and told the Lord, “Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? Even I it is that have sinned and done this evil deed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? Let Thine hand O Lord my God, be on me, and on my house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.”
C. We should take blame for our sins and acknowledge them to the Lord, and ask Him not to take our sins out on our children or others.
D. David gives a great exhortation to His son, Solomon, in verse 8, in the presence of all Israel, and in the audience of our God, Keep and seek the commandments of the Lord.
1. We have discussed keeping the commandments.
2. Here we are seeing David telling Solomon that you must seem the Lord’s opinion in you life.
3. You must not only seek the Lord’s opinion in your life, but you must follow His opinion or commandment in the manner.
4. Today, we see people who do not seek the opinion of the Lord in their life.
5. They have their own opinions and it does not line up in the opinion of the Lord.
6. GIVE EXAMPLES; Living with one another, not tithing, putting the thinks of your desires, the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of live ahead of the Lord.
7. What does the Lord say about it in His Word? What has He told you about it in your prayers? Have you ask Him about it and tried to include Him?
E. There is a reward for those who seek and keep the Lord’s commandments.
1. It will lead your children to the Lord.
2. It will be a testimony that tells your children that the Lord is number one in your life.
3. It shows them that you desire them to seek the Lord too.
4. Solomon tells us in the book of Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
A GODLY MAN WILL GIVE GODLY ADVICE AND FOLLOW IT HIMSELF. Vs. 9
A. Serving God with a perfect heart and with a willing mind is something that each of us should strive to do.
1. A heart can only be made perfect when Jesus in King of it.
2. A willing mind comes from obedience to the Holy Spirit, by doing the things we know He wants us to do.
3. Is your heart perfect?
4. Is your mind willing to follow Christ?
B. We should remember that the Lord searches our hearts and knows, not just the imaginations of it, but the condition of it.
1. John 2:22 – 24 READ
2. If Jesus knew what was in man then, He knows what is in you now. YOU DO TOO!
3. What’s in you life, replacing the Lord, today?
4. What’s in your heart, today?
5. Holy Spirit reveal to them today, what’s in their heart.
C. Seeking the Lord is what He desires of every man.
1. Jesus said, in Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you.”
2. What will be added you may ask? Verse 32 tells us that the Father knows what you need, and these things will be added unto you if you seek Him.
D. If you forsake Him then He will cast you off forever.
E. Forsake means to refuse. Lost person here is a chance for you to accept Him and not refuse Him, what is your answer.
F. Saved person, have you refused to allow Him to lead you in your life?
G. Now I go back to a question I asked you to think about…
1. How much do you want Christ seen in your life?
2. Committing to Him is one thing but making a covenant with Him is something else?
3. Who, as members of this church, wants to commit to serving Him with their all? Come what may, who will make a covenant with God today?
