Summary: Have you ever been Betrayed? Have you been Forsaken? Jesus was both of these and more, He was Betrayed, Forsaken, and Crucified! This message deals with these three words that the scripture tells us of Christ last days.

Betrayed, Forsaken, And Crucified !

By-Evangelist Gary Huckaby D.D.

Our text verses today come from the books of;

Matthew 26:1,2; Matthew 26:30-35; Mark 14:50; John 16:32; and John 19:16.

Matthew 26:1-2, “And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, Ye know that after two days is the feast of Passover, and the Son of man is BETRAYED to be CRUCIFIED.”

Matthew 26:30-35; “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad, But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee, Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.”

Mark 14:50; “And they all forsook him, and fled.”

John 16:32; “Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every

man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is

with me.”

John 19:16; “Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be CRUCIFIED. And they took

Jesus, and led him away.”

BETRAYED

It is one thing to be a traitor, but yet another to be Betrayed. A traitor, is one who leaves the ranks of his fellow country men, to go to the other side; The side of the enemy. A betrayer, is one who secretly sneaks behind your back, to cause you harm, and defeat. Such a man was Judas Iscariot. He was one of the chosen twelve disciples. He had part of the three and a half year ministry of God in the flesh; Jesus Christ the Lord. He was the treasure, of this company, he was numbered with another disciple, when sent out by two’s to be witnesses, of our Lord.

God’s power was known to him, for the disciples were sent forth to cast out devils, heal the sick, raised the dead, Matthew 10:5-8. Judas was with the other disciples when Jesus did great miracles, when He ; Healed the sick, Made the blind to see, when the wind and sea obeyed Him, Raised the dead, Fed the multitudes, Preached and prophesied of coming events, spoke of judgments, of heaven and hell. Judas even went to partake of the communion; but after being exposed; left, to go and betray Christ.

Planned Betrayal

This was not a spur of the moment betrayal, it was a planned betrayal. Matthew 26:14; “Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priest.”

Judas left after the woman with the alabaster box of ointment had anointed Jesus. Judas plotted with the enemies of Jesus to betray him. Verse 15, says, “And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver,” Judas waited for the opportunity to betray him, verse 16, “And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.”

Luke 22:4-6, “And he went his way, and communed with the chief priest and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.”

Judas Exposed

Matthew 26:21-25, “And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I ? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. then Judas which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I ? He said unto him, thou hast said.”

Mark 14:20-21, “And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth as it is written of him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.”

Luke 22:21-22, “But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined; but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! Jesus foretold of His betrayal, and exposed Judas to the other disciples.

The Kiss of Betrayal

Luke 22:47, “And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.”

Mark 14:44, “And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever, I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.”

Matthew 26: 47-49, “And while he yet spoke, lo Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priest and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast And forwith he came to

Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.” The sign or token to the armed band was , “ whom I shall kiss” He is the one. To come so close to heavens door, as to kiss it, but to forever be punished in Hell, what an awful thought!

Reason For Betrayal

Money, Thirty pieces of silver. Matthew 26:15. Popularity, Judas sided with the powers that be. Matthew 26:47. The multitude was following Judas for the first time, but the main reason was that Judas was possessed by Satan, the enemy of God. Luke 22:3. Judas knew what Jesus had said about serving two masters. It

can’t be done, you either serve God or the devil. He knew about Beelzebub, and the unpardonable sin. He knew he was against the Son of god. Jesus said;

Whosoever is not with me is against me. And Judas Iscariot was definitely against Jesus Christ. Jesus even addressed him as, “Friend” until the last. Matthew 26:30, “And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.”

Betrayer Repented Himself

Matthew 27:3, “Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the

chief priest and elders.” It will do us well to read the next verse also: Verse 4, “Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood, And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.” Did you notice that Judas, repented himself! Not repented to God, but to himself. There are many people who have this self repentance, as long as it eases their conscience, it is all that they need. I tell you my friends, you must Repent, as John the Baptist cried, and as our lord Jesus cried out, before you will ever receive forgiveness of your sins! Repent, means to turn

from your works of darkness, unto works of light, in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed

away; behold, all things are become new.” One more thing I must give in this point of our message. The end result of betrayal is death. Romans 6:23, “For the

wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.”Judas, hanged himself. Matthew 27:5, “And he cast down the pieces of

silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.”

Betrayal was the Guide

Acts 1:16, “ Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.” Betrayal, will always guide you wrong!

FORSAKEN

Though Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, the other eleven disciples, also did an awful thing; They forsook Jesus: All of them, fled the scene. There was only one of the bunch, who dared try to defend the Savior at His arrest. This was Peter, the impetuous one. He drew a sword, and cut off the right ear of one of the multitude. We always talk of how bad Peter was, but I want you to know, that man had little fear at the garden’s edge that night. There was a multitude which followed Judas to take Jesus, and they all had weapons, swords, and staves. Peter was greatly

outnumbered, but still gave it a bold try in defense of the Lord.

Peters Boldness

Mark 14:47, “And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priests and cut off his ear. Verse 48 say’s, And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves to take me, Verse 49, I was daily with you in the Temple teaching, and ye took me not; but the scriptures must be fulfilled. Verse 50, And they all forsook him, and fled.”

John identifies the disciple who drew his sword in John 18:20, “Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear: The servant’s name was Malchus.” In Luke’s account we see a little more of this betrayal, and the boldness of several if not all other ten, Peter being the eleventh. Luke 22:49, “ When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?” May be this is what

caused Peter to react in this way, the statement of some of the other disciples. Others were willing to put up a fight, but only Peter reacted with the real threat. Just think, Peter could have went for Judas, instead of the servant of the high priest. But as Jesus stated plainly, “ the scripture must be fulfilled.’ There is no record of the mass of people who carried swords or staves reaction to Peters act of

aggression, but you can believe they saw the last miracle done for a man before His greatest miracle was finished upon that old cross.

Verse 51 say’s, “And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far; And he touched his ear; and healed him.”

The Prince of Peace

Jesus stops any reaction of the multitude, by healing the severed ear of that man, and then he addresses Peter with the words in Matthew 26:52-56, “Then said Jesus unto him, Put up thy sword into his place; for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the

scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? In the same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.” First he heals an ear, then he stands before Peter and tells him, that if he so desired to, he could call for seventy two thousand angels to destroy the world, but he chose to do the will of God, so that the prophecies

would be fulfilled, Completed, finished! Even after all of this at his arrest, the eleven, forsook him and ran away from the multitudes. Now just for a moment,

think with me concerning all we have read thus far about the disciples forsaking. This man Jesus, God’s only Son, God come to earth in the flesh, daily

eats, sleeps, prays, teaches, does great miracles, gives them supernatural power to heal, cast out devils, raise the dead, be his chief men, his ministers, his witnesses, his representatives, they were always around him for over three years, they left

him alone, with that bunch who came and bound his hands, and carried swords, and staves, they ran away! Some Christians run away, some of you will take your

flight before this day is over if you turn your eyes away from God’s will for your life.

Every one left the Dear Lamb of God. No one single person stood with him, he stood alone. Forsaken by all. Betrayed by one of his group, forsaken by the other eleven. Only Jesus could love a person so much! He loves you dear friends, He wants to save you from sin, death, and hell. Trust Him as your Savior today!

Do it right now. Pray, Lord Jesus save my soul, I believe you died for me.

And Crucified

Finally, we must see him when crucified. He the Son of Man, Son of God, God’s Only Begotten Son. Betrayed, Forsaken, and now Crucified.

After the arrest, and the trial of Jesus, by both the chief priest, others, then the governor; Pilot. He was taken and Crucified on Calvary’s hill; Golgotha as it was called. Matthew 27:33, “ And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull.” The mountain itself looked like a skull, it was a mountain of death. The place of the Crucified. Execution was everywhere.

Joseiphus said, “Often the road was lined on both sides with men hanging on crosses. This was Rome’s capitol punishment for those who, rebelled against the

State, or committed criminal acts.

Here it was, that God chose to complete our Great salvation. Here is where, Jesus chose to give the supreme sacrifice for mankind. The place where the condemned of Rome were executed, the place of our redemption. Jesus was nailed to the cross,

both hands and feet, suspended between heaven and earth. Giving his life a ransom for all who will believe in Him. Below the cross the soldiers cast lots for His garments; the whole crowd looking on as Jesus completes His work. In all truth, this death should have been ours; we are the one who should have died this death, for we are the sinners, we are the guilty ones before God. Jesus the sinless one took our place. Isaiah 53:3-6, “ He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hat borne our grieves, and

carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” Jesus the Son of God, Betrayed, Forsaken, and then Crucified: think of it, and it was all for you, and for me.

Do you know this Savior? Have you ever ask him into your heart and life? Do you know that your sins have been forgiven? If you will but come to Christ, he will save you forever. Do it today, do it right now.

Pray this prayer with me: Lord Jesus, Come into my heart, and save me. I believe that you died on the cross, and rose from the dead, to forgive me of my sins, I repent of my sins, and receive you as my Lord and Savior just now. In Jesus name I pray.

Amen!

If you have made a decision for Christ; please write to us, we ail rejoice with you

in this the greatest decision of your life.***
