Sermon Series on Malachi #4
God and Divorce
Malachi 2:10-16
The phrase “Deal treacherously” and divorce would seem to be the theme to this passage of Scripture. And yet it starts out by asking the question “Why do we deal treacherously with one another?” We would do good this morning to ask ourselves this same question.
There are three things that God deals with in this passage.
1. Personal Relationships (verse 10) Now remember the Lord is still speaking to the priest so this message is for the saved. God gives us three reasons that we should not deal treacherously with one another.
A. Because we all have one Father. Ephesians 4:5-6 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
B. Because God created all of us. From my mothers womb…Jeremiah 1:5
C. Because we profane the covenant of the fathers. What covenant? The people are to be Holy before God.
2. Marriage to Unbelievers. Verses 11-12 Lets talk about marriage for just a minuet. Holy Institution.
A. When seeking a mate look to the Lords leadership. (Young men/ladies/teens it is not too early to begin praying now about who the Lord would have you to marry.)
B. Don’t think that you will change him.
C. If he or she wants sex before marriage BEWARE!
D. If they won’t go to church with you.
3. Divorce. Verses 13-16 Verse 16 makes it crystal clear on how God feels about divorce.
A. It hinders our relationship with God. Look at verse 13 (Matt. 5:23 1Peter 3:7)
B. God intended for them to be one. Genesis 2:24
C. It covers you in violence. Verse 16
