Sermon Study #249 – WHAT MADE JESUS ANGRY?
Key Passage: Mark 3:1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Mark 3:2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Mark 3:3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." Mark 3:4 Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. Mark 3:5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
APPLICABLE FACTS FROM MARK 3:1-5
1. There are wounded people at church today.
2. There are people who came to watch (spectators) and not to worship.
3. The wounded must “stretch out your hand” – representing their pain – to be healed. Don’t keep your pain in your pocket, lift up your need today!

WHAT MADE JESUS ANGRY? STUBBORNNESS AGAINST HIM!
Webster defines “stubbornness” = refusing to yield or comply.
Stubbornness is a matter of the heart (ref. verses)!
1. (Jer 3:17 NIV) At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne of the LORD, and all nations will gather in Jerusalem to honor the name of the LORD. No longer will they follow the stubbornness of their evil hearts.
2. (Jer 9:14 NIV) Instead, they have followed the stubbornness of their hearts; they have followed the Baals, as their fathers taught them."
3. (Jer 11:8 NIV) But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.’"
4. (Jer 13:10 NIV) These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt--completely useless!
5. (Jer 16:12 NIV) But you have behaved more wickedly than your fathers. See how each of you is following the stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying me.
6. (Jer 18:12 NIV) But they will reply, ’It’s no use. We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’"
7. (Jer 23:17 NIV) They keep saying to those who despise me, ’The LORD says: You will have peace.’ And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, ’No harm will come to you.’
8. (Rom 2:5 NIV) But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
What does being stubborn against God produce?
(1) Stubbornness (refusing to yield to God’s plan) causes you to go backwards not forward:
Jer 7:22 For when I brought your forefathers out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices, Jer 7:23 but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways I command you, that it may go well with you. Jer 7:24 But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.
(2) Stubbornness (refusing to yield to God’s plan) results in God letting you have your way:
Psa 81:10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. Psa 81:11 "But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. Psa 81:12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
(3) Stubbornness (refusing to yield to God’s plan) produces a false god to follow:
1 Sam 15:23a For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
